LADIES' HOCKEY.
ASHBURTON MATCHES. Thp South Canterbury ladirr/ hockey team played a match apainst Ashbarton eleven on Saturday afternoon. The pronnd was in tVir thousrh slippery after the rains. '.'-.burton had much the better of the prae, combination enabling them to j;et the bnll into thr circle every time a chance o~er*»d, and their stickwork was clever. &outh Cantprbury. on the other hand, relied more on individual effort, and when there ■was a piece of combined vork it was ragged, anQ their pa&sing: bouts, which -vrere few, usually broke 'down owing: to "wild hitting. Their full-backs and the goalkeeper "were very sntc, however, and did a lot of good work. The half-time scoro was: Ashburton 1, South. Canterbury 0. After half-time the visitors showed even to le.ss and when time was called Ashburton'were ir. the lead by 4 goals to 1. Miss 11. HUsset. scored for the visitors, and It. MiUichamp scored all the local team's goal;. Messrs Gow and Bishop refcreed.
Junior Competition. At the conclnsion of the representative ladies' hockey fixture on Saturday AHenton A met High School in a junior competition match, the former winning by two goals, scored by Miss 1). Cartwright, to one, scored by Miss I. Clark. As the result of the game, Allenton A and Methven will have to tight out the premiership in the junior competition, being equal in points.
