The judge, Mrs Farquhar Young, remarked that the performance of the winner was the best she had ever heard either in Great Britain or New Zealand.

Grey Power Board. Tho Eunanga Borough Council has carried a resolution protesting against tho alleged policy of the Grey Power Board in favour of supplying tho largo industries, with power before the ratepayers. Mining Matters. Tho shaft being sunk at the South Black-water Company's mine" 1 is now down 60 feet and in good slate country A drive has been extended 25 feet south. In this drive there are some promising stringers of quartz, and from appearances a reef i 3 not far away. As Boon as the cistern now being sunk is finished the skeleton shaft will be put up, and the further sinking let on contract. The' Weather. ' Rain, Kail, sleet and' snow were all included in the assorted weather experienced on Saturday. Snow provided a rare variant, as it is many years since tho last visitation. In the afternoon tho cold grew more intense, and icy showers alternated with fitful bursts of sunshine. Reports to hand from the country indicate that enough snow fell in some places to make a coating on the ground, and on tho higher levels: the fall was heavy. Shortly before midnight there was a fall of snow and'sleet in Greymouth. There have been mild interruptions to telegraphic and telephonic communication. Saturday's Rugby Union matches were postponed,' but the Leaguo matches were' played. Sunday was bitterly cold, with numerous showers, but the weather is now improving, Old residents state they have never . seen the snow so low oa the Paparoaa before. Tennis. There was a good attendance at tho annual .meeting of tho Reefton Tennis Club. Mr Porter presided. The balance-sheet disclosed that there waa £2l in hand. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr E. W. Spencer; vice-president, Mr P. H. Instone; secretary, Mr Dick; club captain, Mr G. Osborne; committee, Mesdamos Patereon and Reeves, Misses King, Saunders, and Cairns, Messrs Instone, Reeves, Hubbard and Porter. The West Coast tournament, to bo held at Beefton at the New Year, was discussed and preliminary arrangements were made. Personal. Mr A. T. Gandell, of the Railway Engineer' 3 Office, returned to Christchurch on Saturday. Mrs J. Lythgoe left on Saturday for Christchurch, where she will be a competitor at the golf tournament. Mr T. E. Y. Scddon left for Christchurch on Saturday. Mr J. J. Mcintosh, of Hokitika, is Buffering from a serious illness. Constable Corcoran, of the Police Force, left yesterday for Waiahi on escort duty. Messrs C. Neville and F. W. Baillie left for Wellington an Saturday on holiday. Mrs H. Butcher, of Greymouth, is a$ present in Christchurch. Mr E. J. Scantlebury, a member of the Nelson Education Board, waa in Greymouth on Saturday. Detective-Sergeant J. B. Young, of tho Police Force, leaves for Christchurch on Tuesday on transfer. He will be tendered a farewell by local members of the Police Force. Captain Bell has arrived to take charge of the Salvation Army at Greymouth in succession to Ensign Toomer. Mr T. Heenan, of Hokitika, is seriously ill. Mr T. E. White, formorly of St. Albans and Woodend, has taken np his residence at Hari Hari. Bugby roothalL A West Coast junior team willxplay matches in Christchurch towards the end of this month. Nepia and Mill have definitely been included in the Hawke's Bay team to visit Westport. League FoafcbalL The West Coast Centre's Saturday's matches were played on a muddy ground and in driving showers of rain and sleet. [ Linwood fifth grade drew with West Coast fourth grade in an even contest in which there was no score. Marist juniors defeated Addington by 11 points to a At half time the : Bcores were even, Fraser having scored a try for Marists which Quin converted and Marra crossed for Addington! O'Connell converting. After the interval the local team was too fast, and King and Doogan scored two tries neither of which was converted. Mr C Hall was referee. At Omoto, in damp weather, Christchurch Marists fourth grade beat Greymouth Marist third grade by 3 points a tr scored by W. "Williamson, to nil' Greymouth juniors beat Rovers in the knock-out competition by 6 points to niL .Addington Juniors lost to Brunner in a good game at Brunner, the final score being 11—6 in the West Coast team's favour.
