STUDIOUS PRISONERS.
CHAPLAIN APPEALS FOR BOOKS. An appeal for scientific books for ; the prisoners at Paparua gaol has been made by the Rev. F. 11. .Rawlc, chaplain of tho prison, in a letter appearing in the current number of "Church News.'' The letter is as follows: —I want to make an appeal for books for the library. There arel- - prisoners who are eating their hearts put because they have no scientific books to study. Three hours (and in privileged cases four hours) — i.e., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (or 9 p.m.) — are allowed the men in their cells for reading, and then tho lights are put out. In these hours a man serving a long sentence could devote himself to solid, sensible reading; but there are simply not enough books to go round. There are plenty of novels, plenty of out-of-date books; bnt naturally these are not the boofyj for which the men to whom I refer are pining. I suggest to your readers that tbev would be performing a Christian act in giving up-to-date books of instruction, or providing money to buy them —on such subjects as history, chemistry, geometry, engineering, electricity, motor mechanics, wireless, hygiene, astronomy, economics, geography, etc. May I be enabled, through a generous response to this appear!, to cheer the men up?
