AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

CANTERBURY CLUB. The annual meeting and smoke conoert of tlio Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club was held on Saturday night, Mr W. Anderson presiding. The annual report and> balance-gheet stated that the finances of the club were in a most satisfactory position, the balance of assets oyer liabilities, after making provision for depreciation of plant, being £l2B lis lid. Athletic sports of every description had been well supported during the year, and the club had hud itfi full ahajre of success. The club had been represented at both provincial and New Zealand championship meetings, and it was pleasing to seo that it continued to number among its members athletes of the very highest class. The new season promised well, but it was to be regretted that the public of Ohriatchurch did not extend to athletes the same airport as was evidenced in other parts of New Zealand. The question of making the sport mora popular with the public had been considered from time to time, but it was very difficult to find any satisfactory way of increasing attendances at tie meetings. The matter would require considerable attention, and it was to be hoped that the general merit of the performances of their athletes would •ultimately claim the reward of respectable attendances. . The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, congratulated the club on its satisfactory position. He referred to the matter of poor attendances at th© club's meetings, and stated that athletics in Christchurch did not receive the supoort which was accorded in other centres. The past year had seen a high etandard of excellence in the sport, and the next season also promised well. It was hoped, however, that there would be a revival of athletics in the favour of the public. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
