TURF AND TROTTING NOTES.

Acceptances for tho W anganui Jockey Club's Spring -Meeting aro duo io-day. Nominations for the Ashburton County Racing Club's Spring Mating, to be held at Jticcarton, close to-day at 5 p.m. The various events aro well endowed and aro well worth perusal by owners and trainers. Tho change of venuo will ensure liberal patronage by Riccarton stablea, while tho distances of the principal events should moct with tho approval of trainers who wish to give New Zealand Cup and classic canSidates gomo early racing. TTiero is a race for light-harness horses on each day's programme. Acceptances for the Timaru T.C.'s Spring Meeting closo to-nighfc at o'clock. Nominations for the Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting close to-day. Nominations for the Kurow Jockey Club's Spring close on Wednesday.

Final payments for the TVanganui Guineas are due on Thursday (at poet).

Work at Jticcarton on Saturday morning was uninteresting. After tho heavy rain which fell 011 Friday, the tracks were again in a very sodden state and-the few horses worked fast on the No. 1 grass were not sent on watch-broaking missions. His Majesty (F. Llovd) was schooled over three hurdles on Saturday morning. He jumped safely enough, but his effort was not quite so good as others earlier in the week. Lisogno (F. Lloyd) and (A. J. Peart) were companions in a run over four hurdles. The latter gave his usrual safe display and the former improved on her previous work by going into her fences straight and boldly. Her form over the hurdles is particularly good for a begin-, ner.

Silver Oord, the thrwvycar-old filly , by Sunny Lake —Concordia, in H. illis's stable is muscling up well, and "is now showing some speed in her track work.

Tho apprentice, W. Bryce, who was originally in J. T. Jamieson's stable in Auckland, has been transferred to 11-. Longloy and he will finish his time with the Biccarton trainer. The Bonifora gelding, Prosperity, has been doing useful work sinccjoining It, Emerson's team at Biccarton, but is not being hurried. He may not be seen out until some of the later spring meetings. Mr W. Ryan, a well-known sporting figure in Auckland, died suddenly on Friday night. Deceased was a well-known bookmaker in the NorthernN city when the poncillere were licensed in tho Dominion. Seven youngsters took part in a two-year-old parade at Feilding during the course of tho Marten Jockey Club's 'Spring Meeting on Friday. Although there was no suggestion of a race, the chestnut colt Subdivision, by Surveyor Jnanna, moved nicely and finished . in front of tho Baper Money—Elaine filly Note, and the Tea' Tray—Kudu's* sive filly Spode. The others also attracted considerable attention. They were Decoy Bird, by Humbug—Lope • Gull, Joy ICing (brother to Mimetic) by OomedyKing—Joyeuse, Helen, by •Liruond—Helen Portland, and a filly by Kilbroney—Bebekah, Lady Syjtw, the dam of Gold Box «» successful two-year-old last year, has been booked to the Australian-bred horse Acre for the present season. , There was some talk at, Feilding thwt Avola was got at before the Bail"way Handicap on Wednesday, says the •"Evening £ost." This was reported by the mare's owner-trainer, W. Pine, '-to one of - the stipendiary officials of the Conference,- The facts of the case, so far as can be learned, are net very convincing, and it is. understood that the mare was quite herself a fow hours after the race. It is possible that it was some internal disorder rather than dope, bat the suspicions of tho connexions would bo aroused by her poor jshowing after sho had been expected very decidedly to win. Mr W. G. Stead's young horses, under the charge of H. Neagle, left for Sydney by the Maheno on Friday. Amongst thorn was the Surcltedon— Shrill colt, half-brother to Father's Voice, Lake TJni, by Sonny Lake —Arai-te-•uru, -until recently a member of R. CDonndl's team, and Ermongarde, by Charlemagne ll—-Watershoot, have been sent t/> Bydney to be mated with The Tetrarch horse Sarohedon. Rapine looks bright and well (says I an exchange) and in his only start at I Marton ran in tho rear of tho .field most of the way, as might be expected after his long spell. He is quite sound, has done alot of solid work, , and msiy run prominently in early dis- ... jtance races.' Hq will go to Avondalo after Wutgamii. and will run in the Oup, in which his trainer is pleased with his weight. . Royal Divorce is on the burly side, - but he ran such a good race the first day of the Marton meeting, and appeared to bo cleaned up so nicely by it, thai ha was well backed on Thursday, says the "Dominion." Ho raar badly, and was n6ver within sight of his srst day's form. Bo is a good way yet from being near his best, and ho can, in the meantime, be looked upon as an unlikely starter in the Wanganni Eclipso Stakes. B. Rosen returned! from Sydney last week,* and proceeded to the Marton meeting at Feilding, During hia sojourn in Australia he rod® three winnere—one ait Moorofield and two at Grafton. Haicole and Great Epsom are -unlikely starters at the Timeru T.C.'s Spring Mooting. • _ J. H. Wilson ia keeping Harold Burwood, Wainia, and Lincoln Huon in solid work at New Brighton in view of racing them at Timaru on Saturday.

W. Warren's team to race at Timaru jjj unlikely to include Young Carbine, Berenice, D'ArtSgnan, Countryman, and Blue Star. Whispering Willie "on the easy Est sw is unlikely to race again until

. late in the yew a J. Thettaa is giving the trotier • Royal Audubon plenty of useful exercise tA headquarters, and tho eon of Great'Audubon is striding out freely in his work. Mr A. Motes on the Racing. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRBSS.'')

Heavy tain throughout tho night and forenoon fboded the Feitding; course, whicli was in a shocking state, but the Mawvwatu Hunt Club's Meeting wae proceeded, witn.

Nine started in the 'Kiwi tea .Ladies' Bracelet, Birkenoae being an odds-on favourite, with Gay Bobbie, Bkima and Velvet King best backed of the remainder. Velvet King -went to the front and led all the way. Tikiraa challenged over the last two Turlongs, and made a good race -up the straight, but Velvet King won by half a length. Birkenoee was ten lengths away third, with Blue Star and Master i'elix next.

Princo Rufqs was a lit/tie ahorter than, an even money price in the Te Matai Hurdles, carrying nearly twice as much as Bonny Rill. Over the early stages Comedy Princoi got a good break on the field, beinj followed past -the stands by Sir Fanciful, Puketoi, Prince Rofus and Good Mark, with Puketoi beginning to tail off as they entered tho back stretch. At the half mile post Good Mwrk: went to the front, and allowed the way round the home 'bent to Sir Fanciful and Prince Rufus. Over tho last hurdli the favourite and Good Mark were together, and over the last fifty yards Prince Rufus went away by three lengths, with Sir Fanciful over four lengths farther off. Comedy Prince was fourth, and Bonny Still next.

Ar. anticipated, the race for the Manawatu Hunt Cup Steeplechase was full of inciddent, only -the placed horses finishing out of elevon starters. was favourite in an even betting race, with Price and Adrienne 'at the head of the other quotations. Rahere led for a mile, Mid then Woden took up the running, dsppite the fact that Warner had lost an iron, Silverfish, Birkenella and WhctoM following as they started' on the second circuit. Woden was still in charge passing the stands the second time, and with Btrkenslla falling* &t the second of the double, there were only four left in, Woden, Silverfish, Price and Adrienne. Along the back Price raS up. to Woden, who at Iwfc toppled over. Ncsring the second to last fence Adrienne went to the front, and won bv four lengths from Pricp, with Silverfish a hundred yards away. Birksnella, Ringi, Woden, Rahere, Eruera, Whetoki and Supporter fell, and Loohullm was soiled un. Lieutenant Bill w made an even money chance in the Aokautere Hack Handicap, carrying twice as muoh aa Ben l»«vis and Birthmark. The favourite was in i/he lead when they had settled down, being followed by Master Lucerne, Owen and Ben Nevis. fwvoTrrit<a was clear crossing the top, where Owen went "up and ahowed tho into the torn® stretch from. Birthmark and' Master Iwceroe. At the half distanoe Owon was clear, and cLospito a late da®h by Wilderness ths Auoklander got a neck decision, with Birthmark hall a length away third. Muter. Lucerne wt» right up fourth, and, ihen came Bill, Udi Nevis and Last Thought. The Parorangi Hack Steeplechase was recused to a match between Kovno and Onesoa, six other acceptors being withdrawn. In a poor betting r»ce Kovno was favourite. K'avm» led Jor half a mile, and then Oneroa went to the front and stayed there to win by fifteen lengths. Barrier, Aroheen and Miss Hupan*. were withdrawn from the Kairanga Handicap, leaving a field of seven. Mountain Bell was s> firm favourite, with Pot-er Maxwell and Kilceit evenly hocked. The last named waa first out from the tapes, showing the way into the back stretch to Some Red, Pantagrael, Loyal Maid and Peter Maxwell. At the half mile post the favourite was already tailed off, woll beaten. Some Red had a slight advantage over ICilcoit and Loyal Maid at the two furlongs post, but as soon as thay had straightened up Kilceit drew away and won as sho liked by four lengths. ] Some Red hung on to get second money by half a length fro to. Pantagrucl, with Peter Maxwell, L'Amour and Loyal Maid next. Nino contested the Raumai Hunters Hurdles, and a tig favourite was made of Hillation, but after being prominent in the early stages he coon dropped out of the running. When they had gone half a mile Hindi was making play from Lady Dolwill. Itebufl, Eruera and Husker. When the field was running along the hack stretch they wero lost in a driving hxiUtrom. It was not until they camo into the straight again for the pin home that it was 6cen ■ the leader was Eruera, and he went on to win by eight lengths from Rebuff. Lady Dolwill was throo lengths further back, with Hindi at the head of the remainder, who wens well strung out. Tho winner, who paid just on doufclo figures, waa among those that failed to complete the course in the Hunt Cup fttscplechaso earlier in the dav. Mountain Top, De Ltixe aad Tino Maunc* wcro be ß t backed in tho Flaxbourno Handicap, but De Luxe wis the only ono of the trio to be on hand at tho finish. Tino Maun** lad into the back etretfh, but then Takwoa and De Luxe took up the running from Tino Maunga, Mountain Top and Birthmark. Notes on the Eacing. ' I>esj>ite the adverse conditions of bitterly cold weather, the attendance at the Otago Hunt Meeting was fairly large, considering the circumstances, and the financial returns were better than last year. The investment* might have been larger, but a t-omewhat vexatious delay took place before sending the youngsters away that figured in the Two-year-old Parade. The delay was not caused by failure to line up, but in allowing them to circle an unnecessary number of times before being called to face the tapes. K-eal Olad, a filly by Gay Lad from Honesty, began smartest, and led all the way, whilst a three-year-old in Margaret Birney was staying ou well at the finish. The others were not hustled, ftnd moat of them look rather backward in condition, although forward enough to begin stronger work when track and weather eonditjons improve. A good field o£ nine went to the post for the Sea View Hurdles, and Bachelor Gay. in the light of bis form at the Grand National Meeting, started favourite. He. however, lost a lot of ground by trying to shirk the hurdle at the mile post when Barrieon refused. Bachelor Gay got over, and then followed Adjutor ronnd the top, but nothing had a chance with the latter, who came on and won comfortably from the favourite. There was a good go for the almost barren honour of third place, between Olympia, Muzzle, and Calibration, and the first-named just got there. Vasilkov tipped out. at the second to last hurdle. Outside the front division, Galaxy, a fire-year-old by Polydamon from Glamour, shaped well enough to suggest that he may develop into a useful hurdler with experience. Solway was made a better favourite than Quickfarm in the President's Handicap, in which the field got away from a good line, but Gulden Hue hung on tho mark. Royal Wink WW first to break the lino, and then with Qntckform, Gay Raiment, and Bonnie Olive ran in close order from Jolly Glad. Solway was slow to move, and along the back lay too for out to have a chance. On reaching the straight Qaickform, Koyftl Wink, and Bonnie Olive stopped badly, and Gay Raiment and Jolly Glad came on to light out a good finish, with the latter seoring a short neck victory. Solway was a bad third. The Hunt Cup Steeplechase was a chapter of accidents. Wappinp, Priie Rose, and Happy Mao. were running in close order as they crotfsod the stand double, with Cartoon so far hack as to look hopelessly out of it. Wapping refused at the god wall, and interfered with Prize Rose and Happy Mac. This Ifft Cartoon with the result at his mercy. Decruse came alons and refused St the same obstacle. Cartoon cleared the rest of the country, and cantered home from Wapping, who pn.lled up very lame. July Bpark lost his rider at the first fence. The coupled pair, Happy Days and Monoxide, were a strong order for the Jockey Club Handicap, hut the going seemed to tie them up, as theyj made a poor show. Bright Mark soon took charge from Hnrdy Gurdy and Kilharry, with Overdrawn ruining next. Bright Mark came along and won easily by about threo lengths from Kilharry, who beat Hurdy Gurdy by a short length. Overdrawn was a bad fourth. Ooldwater was about the only horse in the Wingatni \ Trotting Handicap who went a level raee, but althongh ho gradually overhauled the front division, he failed to reach Wild Plight, who beat him by four lengths. Black Ravon was three lengths away, and Berma Pointer a good fourth. Mirella was travelling like a winner when running third between the si* and five furlong post, when sho broke badly. Chiming Kinc fell when running with the leader, five and a-half furlongs from home. The winner paid about a Bcoro and a half to his few supporters, and Coldwater also returned a good price for a who shaped well at the recent I'orbury Park Meeting. Dick Travis made most of the running in tho Hunters' Steeplechase, and comfortably resisting a final challenge from Happy Vac, won without being fully extended. Prize Rose stopped badly through lack of condition, and Decruse could not pace it with the leaders..

Roman Archer and Taboo singled themselves out after going a conplo of fnrlongs, vrith G-ay Flower, in the Vauxhall Handicap, bat they stopped and John Bradbury looked a winner at they straightened for lipme. At the distance Relic and Solway airived on the scene and the former won comfortably by two lengths from John Bradbury, who lasted . lons enough to beat Solway. Incnrsio was a moderate fourth. John Bradbury ran a good race for a three-ycar old, acting under a big weight in heavy going. Barriton made the early running in the Hunters' Flat Handicap,, in which a collision between Sporting 01 rl and Calibration as they left the straight, cost, both of them a lot of ground, and Sporting Girl a good chance of winning. Barricon carried on until reaching the straight, where Uncle Bob, afteT being, always fairly handy, came along and won well by three lengths from Sporting Girl, who beat, Barrisnn by five lengths. The others stopped badly towards the end.
