ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. There was ft largo attendance at the fortnightly euchre tournament and dance conducted by the Ilakatcre Lodge in the Tancrrd street Hall on Saturday. Mrs A. Mitchell s Orchestr:'. supplied the music for the dance. The Ashburton Quadrille Assembly lield its fortnightly dance in the Orange Hull ou Saturday* night. Ther.< was a large attendance", and the musie. was supplied by Paybourne 's Orchestra, while Mr L. Civil I acted as M.C. The tender of Mr J. Thompson for the erection of ;; new class room at the Ashburton Technical School at a cost of £7O 10s lias been accepted. Ashburton was thrown into almost complete darkness for about ten minutes prior to -S o'clock, while some of the country people were deprived of light tor about half an hour on Friday night. The cause of the interruption was a break in the transmission line from Lake Coleridge. The load was transferred io another line. The Ashburton Motor-Cycle Club held its opening run for the season to Hakatero over the week-end. when twelve members made the trip under good weather conditions.
Band Concert. There was a fair attendance at a cert given by the First Canterbury Mounted Kifle's' Band under the leadership of Lieutenant \Y. IT. Osborne in the. Theatre Boy.il. The programme vv.'is as follows: —March. "Simplicity"; overture, "Poet and Peasant"; song, "Ti.o Silver Ring," Mrs IT. Na./lor; valse, "Queen of Gems"; hymn, "Aberstwyth"; song hit, "Follow the Swallow"; march, "The British Legion." TWg.-n Notices. The eisjiiination3 in practical music under the atsinices of Trinity College, London, were hesl at the Convent of Mercy, Bakaia, on September 4th by Mr G. P. Vincent, F.T.C.L. First steps (piano)— Tom Shannon; violin, Janet Miller (Methven). PENDARVES. The rainfall for August, 1925, was б,B3m, and for August, 1924, .192 in. The rainfall for the year to date was 29.42 in, and for the same period last year 15.63iu. Bain fell on 16 days during the month, the heaviest fall being on the Bth, when 165 points fell.
