The ladies of the Tpper Tticcarton Sewing Guild, held their annual Sale of Work on Tuesday afternoon and evening, £27 being the net profits. This .sum was fairly satisfactory to the ten or twelve ladies who have worked hard all the winter. The proceeds go towards the Girls' School, Gela, in Melanesia, and the support of, a leper in Dr. Main's Hospital, Hangchow.

A very enjoyable children's evening was held in the Orange Hall on Thursday evening for the junior members of the United Amateur Swimming Club. The Come-In Club, opened a few months ago in spacious looms in t\ cestui- .street, behind '"lhe 1 resi> office, is increasing in membership everv week, and its activities are growing to keep pace \('ith the membership. In the cdub-rooms, which are open under the care of a responsible custodian from 4 to 10 p.m. each day, members in comfortable surroundings can read, write, sing, or dance as fancy dictates, and can take with them to the club their friends, either male or female. On Thursday night the club members elected an advisory committee, whose chief duty it will he to arrange entertainments. Manchester street, was filled to overflowing last night when a social of welcome was, tendered by liis parishioners to the llev. Father J. O'Connell, S.M., parish priest of St. Mary's, who has been for a, five months' health-recruiting trip to Australia, and who returned to Christohurch yesterday morning. The proceedings opened with an enjoyable concert programme given ao follows: Chorus, pupils of St. Mary's School; pianoforte duet, Misses D. Blake and Mavis O'Brien; song, Rev. Father Outtrim,: 5.M..; piano solo, Miss Joan, Blake; song. Mrs F. O'Brien; instrumental trio, Misses A. Rennie, B. Rennie, and M. Rennie; song, Mr Bernard Rerinell; song and dance, pupils of St. Mary's School. In a cordial speech of welcome, •Mr H. H. Loughnan expressed to Father O'Connell the pleasure felt by St. Mary's parishioners at having, once more, amongst them their parish priest, whose health they were happy to know had greatly improved during his fojourn in Australia; Father O'Connell J who | was received with 'much enthusiasm, ' thanked Mr Louerhnan and his devoted ■ people for their whole-hearted welcome, and said that, while filled with admiration for Australia, and its warm-hearted people, he to be home again. He paid p., tribute to the loyalty of the priests who had so zealously carried on the work of the parish during his absence. Supper, served by the members of the Children of Mary Sodality and a bevv of assistants, terminated ai happy gathering. DANCE AT CARLETON. A very successful plain and fancy dress dance was held in the Carleton Hall. The proceeds were in aid of the Eastern in the forthcoming Carnival, which has for its objective the building of a new Town Hall for the Oxford district. In spite of the wet night, and the fact that the dance had been postponed from the previous week, a large crowd assembled, and a most' enjoyable time was spent by young and old alike, dancing to spirited music Supplied by Messrs Hooper and Debenham's Jass Band. Mrs J. Spencer and Mr A. Cooper, kindly supplied extras. A pleasing feature of the evening was the large number of children who paraded in fancy costumes, and fclie judges, Messrs Debenham And Hooper, awarded the prizes as follows: Girls best fancy dress,. Peggy Mcliarry (Spring); most origina'l, Bernice Spencer (Oxford New Town Hall); boys' best fancy dress, Stanley Skurr (Father Christmas) ; most original, Noel Skurr (Bed-time). The ladies' prize was won by Miss E. Baxter (Twilight). Miss is. Doody (Yankee Sailor) won the prize for the most original. Mr J. Spencer Queen) and Mr R. Garlick (Uncle Sam) were successful in the gentlemen's class.
