TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for the AVanganui JocUct Clubs Spring Meeting arc duo on Monday. . f Xomina.tions for the Ashburton County Racing Club's Sprin.2 Mectinj:, to be held* at Kicrarton, close on Monday at o p.m. There are two events on tliu profrrammo. Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club's Spring Meeting close at 9 p.m. on Monday. First acceptances for the New Zealand Cup were taken last evening, reducing the field from 60 to .">l. Tlin nine horses that, were withdrawn were: Suggestion, Gala Day, Ktihio, Runnymede, Yoma, Sanctuary, Solferitc, Stream, and Monoxide.
The Otago Hunt Meeting at "Wincatui to-day ushers in the new season in the southern districts. The. fields in all erente promif*? to lxi above the average, and the racing should bo particularly interesting from the fact that several three-year-olds with classic engagements will be seen out for the first time this season, while somo of Mr Tl: Acton-Adams' team, including Cartoon and Tholomon, will also have a run in public before proceeding to Australia.
In tho Seaview Hnrdle Handicap, Bachelor Gay will carry most money. \He has had recent racing, and this should stand to him, oven though ho is reviving only 41b from Cartoon and 21b from Adjutor. Muzzle, too, only reeds to jump right to lend further interest to the contest.
Arpent, Margaret Birnev, and Pink Note, three-year-K)lds, with classic engagements, figure in the President's! Handicap. Arpent showed good form early in his two-year-old career, and has only to reproduce it to bo hardest to boat, of the three mentioned. Apart from these it is not a good field, but flashes of form shown in tho past by Flique, Solwav, and Royal Wink will be remembered, and the winner, whatever it happens to be, should make a fair return.
The Otago Hunt Club Cup fiqbt is the smallest of the day. and, of the six acceptors, four have otlior engagements during tne day. Prize Rose is a really good hunter, and he would very nearly win both this and the Hunters' Steoplechaso if produced in as good condition as when ho won the Maiden Steeplechase at the same fixture in 1923, his last appearance in public. Having raced recently, Happy Mac reads best of theothers.
Overdrawn and Circulation, both owned by Mr L. C. Hazlett, are Derby candidates, and at the weights Allotted for the Jockey Club Handicap would not have much difficulty in returning a ■single dividend if they ran up to classic standard. Neither has raced for a considerable period, but being good youngsters last season particular interest is being shown in their first appearance this Reason. Others in the race, including Mountain Lion and Happy Days, must also bo considered from the fact that they have been racing through the winter, and both have shown form.
John Bradbury, also freely engaged in the three-year-old glassies this season, has a poor field opposed to him in the Yauxhall Handicap, and on, paper his strongest opposition appears to lie in the Australian-bred gelding Roman Archer.
The Hunters' Flat Handicap field, as with the Hunters' Steeplechase, will influenced by form in earlier events. A fresh "horse, Sporting-Girl, appears to be well treated with & 13 after her form at the Christcliurch Hunt Meeting, but Muzzle, if saddled up for this race in preference to the Seaview Hurdles, will have a bigger following than the Kilrain m^re. The Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, won by Polyphontes, was the most valuable event decided during the current season in_ England, and the horse's" owner received £11,943 for first prize. - A special horse train will leave Christchurch for Timaru on Saturday, September 12tli, for the Timaru Trotting Club's Meeting.- The train, will return to Christchurch on the conclusion of the meeting.
TROTTING NOTES.
More than one owner missed the nominations for the 1927 New Zealand Derby Stakes and it is understood the delay of a letter through the post is engaging the attention of a northern sportsman whose entries arrived a day late.
