PERSONAL. (special to "thb prkss.") GSEYMOUTH, September 4. Mr John Stark is visiting Greymouth. Mr Frank Eller, of Wellington, who has been on a business visit to the Coast, will leave for Christchurch tomorrow. The death occurred this morning at the Westland Hospital of Mr Henry Conrad Kmmett. of Ross. Deceased, who was 19 .years of age. was a native of Ross, and a school teacher by profession. He had been suffering from a serious illness for some months. Robert Cyril Munro Irwin, formerly of Hokitika. died recently at Waipukurau. Dec eased was for a time Inspector of Soldiers' Securities at Wanganui and Palmerston North.

A Collision. Constable Turner, who was recently transferred to Westport, had a narrow escape from a serious accident. Yesterday afternoon, when cycling along Palmerston street he collided with a large motor-lorry. Prompt action by the driver of the latter in applying the brakes saved the police officer from injury. but hie bicycle was badly damaged. _ Advice has il>een received at the Roman Catholic Presbytery. Greymouth, of the death at Limerick, Ireland, of the father of the Rev. Father •Long.

Kumars. Bofough Council. At the fortnightlv meeting of the Kumara Borough Council, Councillors complained of the failure of the Government to repair the zigzag. The Council voted £35 for the jubilee funds and it was announced that the Mines Department had. made a grant of £2OO. 1 The Weather. The weather to-day was very boisterous. A heavy thunderstorm this mornintr preceded torrential rain from the north-west, which continued nearly all the remainder of the day. Telephone communication south of Ross is interrupted. Tunnel Traffic. The aggregate of the goods traffic through the Otira Tunnel this week from the West Coast to Canterbury will be approximately 7755 tons. Grey-mouth Jockey Club.

Messrs T. E. Coates (chairman), W. R. Kettle, I. Wingham, A. Smith, and K. Williams were present at a meeting of the committee of tho Greymouth Jockey Club, held this afternoon.

Correspondence was received from the West Coast Rugby League with reference to the promise given regarding a new ground in front of the grandstand for next "season. It was decided to allow the matter to stand over pending a conference with the League. ... The following committees were appointed for the ensuing year :—District committee: Messrs Coates, H. F. Doogan, A. Beban, Kettle, and W. H. Parfitt; stewards, Messrs Coates, A. Blair, H. J. Bignell, K. Williams, W. H. Parfitt, Kettle, and Wingham; judicial committee: Messrs Coates, Doogan. Bignell, Wingham, and J. W. Hannancourse committee: Messrs Parfitt-, Smith; Bignell, Wingham, and Beban; programme committee : Messrs Doogan, Wingham, Williams. Kettle, and Betoa^i. Officials for the year were appointed as follows: —Judge, Mr H. P. Olney; assistant judge. Mr H. G. Carter; handicapper, Mr J. Noble; starter, Mr R. Hatch; timekeepers, Messrs H. W. Kitehingham and P. C. Heaphy; auditor, Mr F. H. Kilgour. The president,: Mr T. 13. Coates, was elected to represent the club on the Dates and Licensing Committees of the New Zealand Racing Conference. On a recommendation, from the annual meeting it was resolved to make donations of £2 2a to tho Municipal Band and £lO to the Grey Hospital. A. and P. Association. A competition in vegetable growing for school children has been inaugurated by the West Coast A. and P. Association. The latter has approved of the following classes: —Potatoes, cabbages, carrots, parsnips, and onions, MrniTiff Matters. Work will be resumed at the State mines on Monday. „ Another stopwork meeting was held this morning and it was decided to allow the grievance regarding timbering to remain in abeyance pending the return of Mr I. A. James, superintendent.
