• "While the weather overhead on Saturday was fairly'good, tho local courses vcro so water-soaked that play was not practical, and in most cases the events scheduled were abandoned. Nothing eohld have been better for Shirley, however, than the heavy soft rain of the last few days of last* week, a3 the heavy top-dressing which had just been spread on most of tho fairways needed just such a soaking to spread it and bind it to the soil, and in. view of tho fact that tho committee arc bending every eucrgy't-o getting tho course in firat-class condition for tho championship meeting ju /Jfcptfcmber, nothingcould have suited them better.

Archibald Edward /Woncs Compston lias jumped into fame 3a two weeks and more power to him. Ho is a young man and, above all else, lie is keen about the game of golf. There, are not enough ■Englishmen, professionals or amateurs, who so far forget themselves in their interest of tlio game, as to throw off coat and jacket in the midst of a round and'go at the next shot, as if that shot wero the only important object left in life. It sounds more American thau British, and yet this is Compston's style. He is so keen he forgets himself iu the. playing of the shots.

Compston tied with Ted Hay for the position of runner-up in the Open Championship and he has now followed this up by winning the Thousand Guineas Tournament at Gleneagles against the best of England and Scotland, beating tho great Abo Mitchell in the final by one stroke.

We must prepare pursclvcs to know moro~ of this young player. Who ever heard of E." R. Whitcombe before he was runner-up to "Walter Hagen in the Open Championship in 1924f Yet he has been in the limelight ever since and has made large sums by his writings.' A. E. V. Compston is professional at the North Manchester Club, and was previously engaged at Kidderminster and at Coventry. He finished eighth in the Open Championship in 3920, and reached the semi-final in the Glencagles tournament iu 1922. He was runner-up iu the Leeds Thousand Guineas Tournament last year. Troon is his favourite course and the cleek his favourito club. In the Open this year his golf was the most consistent, as he did 76 in the first round and 75 in each of the three following rounds.
