SKETCH CLUB EXHIBITION.

The School of Art Sketch Club held its monthly, exhibition on Saturday evening, n representative collection of about eighty works being hurtg. The function was largely attended, keen interest being shown in the work which was of a most varied character. Studies were exhibited in oils, water colours, pen and ink, pencil, et-chings, and posters. The general standard of work was very good, with some outstanding examples excellent in subject and treatment. A number of humorous drawings in colour and some caricatures of well-known School of Art personalities caused considerable amusement. An interesting feature also was the exftrcrse of imagination in design and illustration work, some excellent results being obtained. In the majority of the landscapes, a feeling for decoration was evident, .the search for pleasing arrangements of masses producing some happy results. The set subject for the m:<nth, "Street Scene with Buildings," brought in som3 good entries. The exacting nature of the subject gave the students a number of problems in perspective to solve, and much care and thought had been expended on the exhibits in this section. Colombo street and Cathedral square were shown along with other streets of the city, and some subjects from abroad. ... Mr A. I'\ Niooll opened the evening with a . few introductory remarks, commending the students on what lie thought one of the best Sketch Club shows he had eoen. The club was for- ■ tunate in having two critics for the evenin", Mr Hart, the architectural instructor at°'the ' school to taka the set subject, and Mr Horridge for the remainder of the exhibition. • . ... Mr Hart prefaced his criticism with some, genc.ul notes on perspective and architectural sketching, emphasing the need, for a thorough grasp of the fundamental laws of persnectivo drawing. He awarded the prize in this section to Mr Russell Clark. The task which* Mr Horridgp faced was no easy one, but his individual treatment of the large number of wrrks in rpany mediums was thoroughly appreciated' by all present, nticl the vote of thank's to both sneakers, moved by Mr Jj. Greener, was heartily applauded. Mr hj, Blakeley secured the awarcl in the open section.
