CANTERBURY MARKETS.
,BT ora COMJtET.UiI, EDITOR.) Friday Evening. The "vvciither ]ias very materially lessened tlic amount o? business through in general produce lines, the only exception being potatoes, whioh. as forecasted in recent reports, are hardening in value. Sufficient ■wheat- is to be landed within the next .month to meet milling requirements for some time to come. The landed price of this -wheat. S.I. port-, will be found more reasonable than expected in many quarters. As a result of tho impending importations, fowl -wheat- is scarcely so firm in price, the prospect of inferior Arheai being now utilised for milling not being so probable as it -was prior to tho outside purchases. Fowl ■wheat is quoted at 6s lid f.o.b. Oats, though showing no alteration in quotations, are invested with a weaker feeling. Ono or two large northern holders who were surprised at the facility with which their Juno contracts were filled liave sold their July purchases of A Gartons. Private advices from tho South do not confirm the reports of a Iscarcity down there. As a matter of fact, the stocks in storo are stated to be surprisingly heavy, and they aro being reduced very slowly. If thero is actually a shortage the last week's weather should help to reveal the fact, but thero is no appreciablo enquiry in spito of the climatic misbehaviour. Oata btc oil offer in Canterbury at 4s Gd f.o.b, s.i., for A Cartons, and" 4s 2id for B's, with few buyers. Imported cowgrass is being quoted at. 120s a cwt, or about 13d a lb. Thero it little locally grown stuff of good quality boing offered. _ . Merchants' stocks of linseed aro held at ,a price that, docs not. permit business at, present quotations. Growers' who sold early have the best of the position. Potatoes have taken a firm swing upwards. Threo weeks tho quotation was iis f.0.b., 8.i.; at the. boginning of this week it was £-5 12s Cd. and to-day it is &6 os. Tho weather is largely responsible for this spurt, but not. a little of it is duo to the growing.feeling that export to Australia will dovelop and also to the belief that tho [ crop will fall short of sorno of the earlier optimistic estimates. Tubers have been sold fairly extensively for July at £6 os. Advices from Australia are to tho -effect that tho Health Department thero is agreeable to accept the New Zealand grader's certificate as to the soundness of the potatoes. The fear that tho tubers they might Bend • might be turned down on arrival had been tending to discourage operations with Australia. Auckland enquiries arc. now freer. The Wingatui, leaving at the beginning of the week, is taking a small shipment north, and it is understood that the following boat will j not leave until a week later. Very few farmers.aro responding to the advances in prices, and those that qpo can ask £4 15s a .ton on trucks, a shade moro if prompt delivery can be guaranteed. The undug potatoes have received . such a deluge that it will be some timo before supplies from this source will be available, and pitted tubers aro in almost as difficult a position. In any case, few growers are prepared to open their pits at currenL prices. , The following are nominal quotations, free of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise stated l Wheat—Tuscan 6s Bd, Hvnters 6s lOd, Pearl 7s f.0.b., sacks extra; fowl wheat 6s lid f.o.b. ;

Following arc prices per pair:—Table chickens os to 14s Cd, hens 3s Cd to lis, ducks 7s 6d to 14s 6d, geese 6s to Bs, turkeys 18s to-465. Tho wet weather has had a bad effect on the. egg market. Supplies wereTery short this, week, with tho result that a: considerable advanco in prices was recorded. The Canterbury Co-op. Poultry Producers, Ltd.. quote the following prices per dozen for "Chain*' brand eggs:—First grade hen eggs 2s 7d, second grade hen eggs 2s od, and duck eggs 2s od. . ASHBURTON MARKET. Although there was a movement in the wheat market last week, it is fairly quiet at the present time, and growers who arc holding oh to their wheat are asking (oo high a nrico for the millers to bo interested, fowl wheat has caned bock about Id per bushel. Merchants report a fair enquirv for seed, but tho recent bad wcatler has seriously interfered with tho sowing operations. This is very unfortunate, as indications pointed to a fair acreage being sown Lad the weather conditions been suitable. The market for oats is steady, but 'here is not much business passing. " So tar us can bo gathered, the bulk of the oats ncents to be, in. the hands of the merchants. (Jrade Gallons fluctuate abo'Jl Id per bu.ihe) according to the position in which the buyer or seller is placed. There ii.no quoiable change in either Algerians or Duns. The prices may bo. quoted as follows:—A grade Cartons 3s 7d to 3s B'd, B's 3s 3d to 3-j 4d, undergrade* down to'3s: first grade Algerians 23 8d to "s Od, feed variety 23 3d to "s 6d, and lower grades at lower mo.iev; first grade Duns 3s 6d to 3s 7d, ordinary feed about 3s 3d; lighter quality abo'it 3s. All prices arc quoted at per bushel on trucks, country stations. Ryegrass and Cocksfoot.—On fecouat of it being tho off season there is no business being done between tho merchants and the farmer.
The position as regards Partridge jtca.*- is unchanged, there being 00 enquiry from England. The value is still nominally 53 per bushel 00. tr scks.
Chaff.—Tho limited demand for good, bright quality chaff still continues and 80s per ton on trucks is the buyer's idci of value for this cla. e s. _ Lower grades are not in requeßt, nnd it is difficult to dispose of good f.a.q. at S3 1 Or; per ton. Light and badly .discoloured chaff i 3 unsaleable exopt as cow feed. .
The feature of tho potato market during the past weok is the decided rixe of p.bout 10s per ton, this being: caused more by continued wet weather than any shortage 01 supply. As the growers have been compelled to. cease digging operationK, those who actually had potatoes availablo for. prompt delivery were able to command a good price. Export 10 Australia m .still under discussion, but merchants have t:oi vet taken tip any business. So far no d.imazc has been reported to potatoes that arc. still in the ground. To-day's value for white tabic potatoes is to 80s per ton, and about Son for Dakota table*. It is considered that there must be a fair quantity of potatoes still in pits, but holders do not appear to be anxious to sell at to-day's values. MELBOURNE GRAIN AND PRODUCE. MELBOURNE, July S. Quotations are:— Wheat—Nominal, 6s Id to 6s 2d. Oats —Milling, 2s 7d to 2s 8d; feed, 2s 4d. ■ Barley—English, ■ 5s 6d to 6s; Cap", 4s 4d to 4s 3d. I'otatoes— £H .">••; to SO. Onions—£l6 to it 7.
