SUMNER ITEMS.

* Euchre Tournament, I Notwithstanding the inclement weather, a largely-attended euchre tournament was held iu the Sumner Town Hal!, ia aid of the" local Beautifying Association's Queen Fund. The prir.es. which consisted cf a dainty bedroom clock and packet of handkerchiefs, were won by Mrs Graham and M; Soanes respectively. Booby prizes were won by Mrs dough and Mr Jamieson. The president, Mr T. Newburgh, in presenting the prizes, referred with gratification to the large attendance, which included a number of visiters from Redclift's. This promised well for the series of social evenings which had Ven arranged to augment the Quecu Carnival Fund. British and Foreign Bible Society. The annual meeting of the British and Foreign Bible Society will be hold in the Parish Room oil Wednesduv. when the Rev. M. Calder. the new general secretary, will address the meeting. The Mayor is to be present, and will introduce the speaker. Sumner Ladies' Guild. A card party, in aid of the funds of the Sumner Ladies' Guild, was held in the Cadena Tea Rooms on Thursday evening, details of the arrangements cf the room being cosily dealt with by Mr A. M. Don. Prizes were given by Mesdames H. J. Marriner, W. G. Sm'ithson, and Trerise. Mesdames C. C. Crosbic and J. Lee gave sweets, and Miss Inman the award for the lucky table. Amongst those present were:—Mes dames Merry, C. M. Roswell, Trerise, Crosby, Jnman, J. Lee. G. A. Alexander. T. B. Bonlton, F. Graham, W. 11. Nicholson, L. Baker, McGairey. Mills, Powe, C. E. Claydon, Fantham. Unwin, E. A. Johnson, Fluerty, R. Baker, J. Young, Kirk, H. J. Marriner, Misses Harris and Pcakc, and Messrs Miller, G. A. Alexander, C. Merrv, Powe, E. L. PL Brown, W. H. Brown", Carter (2), O'Neill, L. Baker, McGarrey, and Furze. During the evening a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Don for his excellent arrangements. The first prizes were won by Mrs Inman and Mr Hastie: consolations by Mrs L T nwin and Mr Powe, and special prizes by Mesdames W. H. Nicholson and J. Young. Plunket Society. On Thursday afternoon a very successful Plunket "at heme" was held in the Parish Room for the purpose of furthering interest in the Society in Sumner, During the afternoon interesting addresses were given by Mrs A. 11. Bristed, Matron Cunnington, and Nurse Wilson, while Mrs Buxton contributed several musical items. Amongst those prosent were:—Mrs 11. J. Marriner, Mrs C. E. Claydon, Mrs Grey, Mrs C. Benjamin, Miss Deacon, Mrs L. G. Carter, Mts W. E. Mouldoy, Mrs Seymour, Mrs E. A. Johnson, Mn, F. Slater, Mrs Simm, Mrs" Richards, Mrs G. Pascoe, Mrs Gibbs, Mrs L. P. Longuet, Mrs Merritt, and Matron Cunnington, and Mrs A. W. Beaven. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the Ladies 1 Committee, and a bookstall, in charge of Mrs F. Slater, did excellent business. Bowling Club.

A very pleasant social was held on Thursday evening in the Bowling Club's pavilion, where the members entertained the ladies at a progressive euchre evening. The decorations were tastefully schemed In the club colours —brown and gold—with the- addition of prettily arranged evergreens. The prizes were won by Mrs G. Foster and ilr W. J. Hampton; and Mrs W. Mitchell and Mr H. D. Bates. During the evening the president, Mr W. G. Black, in a happy speech, 6aid that the members had organised the function as a small return for the great kindness of the ladies in organising afternoon tea for the Saturday players, throughout the season. He apologised for the absence of Mr G. W. C. Smithson, the club delegate to the Centre, and for the absence of Mr A. J. Benzie, of the Canterbury Centre, and on the latter's behalf, presented the certificate given by the Centre to the winning rink at the Easter tournament. This was won by a Sumner rink, consisting of J. Martin, F. C. Cooper, T. F. Chambers, and TV. Henley (skip). Mr Henley returned thanks on behalf of tiie rink. During the evening, musical items were given by.Mr Cook and Mrs H. W. Heslop, while exhibition games of billiards were given bv Messrs It. Main, E. A. Johnson, H. W. Heslop, and F. C. Cooper. Amongst those present were Mr W. G. Black, Dr. and Mrs Slater, Mrs H. Barlow, Mr and Mrs T. F. Chambers, Mr and Mrs H. D. Bates, Mr and Mrs C. M. Mazey, Mr and Mrs W. S. Mitchell, Mr and Mrs S. W. Dean, Mr and Mrs E. A. Johnson. Mr and Mrs H. AV. Heslop, Mr and Mrs G. Foster, Mr F. C. Cooper, and Messrs W. Henley, W. J. Hampton,R. Main, Miss Thomas, Mr and Mrs Cook, Mrs F. W. Partridge, Mr and Mrs MoLaughlan (Spotswood), Mr H. J. Williams, Mr J. Browne, and Mr C. Wilson. Ladies' Rifle Club. There was a good attendance at the weekly shoot. The first prize was won by Mrs C. M. Roswell, Miss Bamford and Miss Buckham tying for second place. In the final, Miss Bamford secured the prize and so wears the brooch for the week.
