MR ARCHER AT TIMARU.

TO THE EPITOa Of "THE PSESS."

Sir,—The above Leading caught my eye on opening "The Press'' this morning, and so, naturally, I was interested .to know what induced his Worsliip to stray from home. Evidently the inhabitants of Timaru have no time for him, or his utterances, to judge by the meagre attendance of ?0 persons.' Perhaps he. expected a crowded house something iiketiir Harry Lauder obtained, but evidently, as an entertainer, he is not in the sain© street, and no wonder when you read the piffle he gave utterance to. In part of his address he states: that our beautiful garden city m God's Own Country contains "ten thousand peopJe living in hovels not fit far habitation. If this is true, why not let the Immigration Department in the Old Country know about it, and that, 1 think will soon step Mr Archer's complaint about the Government encouraging immigration He further states that the Labour Partv could end that state of affairs in sis months. Isow, l*t Mr Archer get his Party together and see what he can do at housing without wasting his time in Timaru If he is successful the ten thousand living in hovels will be sure to give him their votes at the next Mayoral election. I also note that one of Mr Archers statements apply to our late highly respected Premier, Mr Massey, and he MkVd the people of Timaru and elsewhere to believe that the late Mr Massey had never represented the interests of 50 per cent, of the people. If there was * particle of truth m such a statement would there have been such iimverbil erief and respect shown for him throughout the Dominion and outade WO T f am , n re lam not alone in my indignation at such statements, coming from the Chief Magistrate oj: the .city but regret that I have not the gift of letter writing to enable me to express mv indignation in a more forcible manner, but at the same time 1 feel certain there are many of your readers who will feel with me.—lours, etc. BELIEVER IN LOYALTY TO YOUR CITY. July 3rd. 1925.
