On Monday afternoon the staff of the Kaiapoi School entertained at afternoon tea Miss M. M. Collins, who is severing her connexion with the school. The headmaster, on behalf of the teachers and children, wished Miss Collins every success in her new work, and presented her with a handsome xylonite toilet set. Miss Collins suitably responded. Despite tho unpleasant weather and the sodden state of the links, the members of tho Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club played a match yesterday afternoon against the members of the Timam Ladies' Golf Club. Some of the games were closely contested. The Christchurch ladies won the match by seven games to ono game. The visitors weir© the guests of tho Christchurch Clirb at tea after the match.

The president and committee of the Sumner Plunket Society will be "At Home" this afternoon in the parish room, from 2.30 to 4.30, to all mothers visiting the nurse, members, and friends interested in the work of the society. The will of the late M • Henry Samson Clark, founder of the advertising firm of Samson Clark, draws attention to the work that women have achieved in business. The controlling influence in tho firm has hcen left to Miss J. A. Reynolds and Mis Wood (who .-hiring: the war was chief executive officer of the London War Pensions Committee). Miss Reynolds's career is something: of a business romance, as she joined the firm as typist, and bv her great business capacity worked her way up to the position' of director. She is one of the v-ioneer women in advertising, and has specialised in advertisement as an anneal to women.

The Selwvn street Hall was again crowded on' Saturday evening, wh*n the .Selwvn Assembly held its dance. There we're over eighty couples present and all spent a very enjoyable evening. BRITISH AND FOREIGN SAILORS' SOCIETY.

• The grer.t interest taken in the work of the British and Foreign Sailors Society was manifested in a remarkah.e manner yesterday afternoon when, m response to the invitation of the presidents and committees of. the Ladies Guilds, the Jellicoe Hall was filled with, friends and wellwishers of the 'Society, who bravely faced the elements in order to be present. Other welhyishei» who were unable to bo present sent donations, and besides the goodly pile of books collected the fimds ot the Guild were considerably augmented. Tho guests were received by Mrs JH Hall, president of the Christchurch Guild. 'She was assisted by the presidents and ladies of the other guilds, who later on dispensed delicious atternoon tea. During the afternoon Mr J. A. Frostick president of -the Association: spoke of the aims of tho Society, now in existence 107 years. He introduced' Captain Marshall, Commissioner at Lyttelton, who spoke interestingly «>t the work of the Society in Britain, particularly during the yeans of the war. He spoke appreciatively of the won-: of the ladies' guilds, and tor "more and more and more" worKcrs for the. cause. . , The much enjoyed musical programme was contributed to by Mrs J. Wilke, of Ashburton, was married to Arthur, second son of Mr and Mrs A. Read, also of Ashburton. The Rev.'Charles Perry officiated. The bride, who entered the churcii on the arm of Mr W. White, of Little River, who subsequently gave her away, was attired in a simple frock of ivory silk marocain cut on classical lines, with touches of silver at the neck and sleeves, and finished with a cabouchon of silver leaves, ending in a trail and tied with sliver streamers at •the back. Her richly embriodered tulle veil was held in place with a band of silver leaves finished with a circlet of orange blossom on either side. ' The bride was attended by her sister, Bertha, as bridesmaid, who wore a pretty frock of pale .mauve- crepe de chine trimmed with a rich panel of, satin ribbon that hung from shoulder to hem, arid was caught in at,the waist with a spray of flowers to tone. Her hat wa-s of black tulle and lace finished with streamers and touches of mauve. The bridegroom was attended by Mr J. Patterson, as best man. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Dorothy Tea Rooms, Mrs W. White receiving her guests wearing a smartly braided navy costume and Jiat of hatter's plush finished with an osprey. Later, the happy couple left for the north. flie bride wearing a smart coat-frock of navy garbadjne and liat to match.

BACHELORS , BALL AT DARFIELD. There was an air of festivity in the Darfield Hall on Friday night, when the bachelors of Darfield held their annual ball. The ballroom was effectively decorated, and much credit is due to Mr L. Westwood for the able manner in which he carried out the arduous duli-'s of hon. secretary. . About 500 wore present, 200 couples taking part in the Grand March, wliuh was led by Miss Chapman and Mr L. 'Westwood. Sutherland's Jazz Band supplied excellent music, and extras were played by the Darfield Jazz Band and by Mr L. Marsden. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Messrs IT. King, G. Reveley, and Boyr-e. and supper was provided by the committee.
