A message from Santa Barbara states that three more violent shocks shook the city early to-ilay, following a series of tremors overnight, ami caused injuries to a number of workers and special police, though apparently there were no deaths. The inhabitants have either fled from the city or taken the precaution to sleep in the open. The total death-list is now 3". The Hollywood picture studios pro vided wonderful spotlights to assist in the search for bodies during the night. The general exodus from the city is continuing, and bundle-laden families are choking the roads rent by the earthquakes. Only construction and wrecking-crews are permitted to enter the ruined business sections of the city, which is guarded by soldiers and sailors. Tho tremendous nervous strain and uncertainty regarding more shocks and fright is causing mental and physical collapses. The brunette hair of several women patients turned grey when the hospital rocked. A father and three children went insane when their home was washed into the ocean by the flood from tho broken dam.
UNPROTECTED SHOPS RESPECTED. VALUABLES WORTH MILLIONS WAIT CLAIMANTS. ("A*OUB.") (Received July Ist, 8 p.m.) SAN" FRANCISCO, Juno 30. The battleship Arkansas lias arrived at Santa Barbara with naval doctors to relieve the exhausted physicians and 200 more soldiers and marines for guard duty. No looting has heen reported, though jewellery and other shops are unprotected. Ten million dollars worth of valuables are in the 'hands of the authorities awaiting claimants. Officials believe that another earthquake will level the standing ruins of the city and make the gay resort a desert of concrete and mortar. There is extreme danger to pedestrians from sagging walls and balancing cornices, which workmen are ready to dynamite when the tremors cease. The sultry atmosphere is intensifying the nervous tension for relief workers and the apprehensive inhabitants. The keeper of Santa Barbara lighthouse reports that it was completely destroyed.
