MAYOR AND HIS DEPUTY.
DIFFERENCES SETTLED. (SrECUI, TO "the press.") GISBOKNE, July 1. The Borough Council proceedings last night had a dramatic turn. The vexed question of the appointment of $ Deputy-Mayor came up for consideration when Cr. Toncycliffe proceeded with a motion of which notice had been giren, favouring the- ejection of Cr. Thomas-Todd. The debate was at times lively and heated, several of the Council supporting the candidature of Cr. Coleman (Laoour). Anally the Council elected Cr. Todfl, in spite of the strong opposition of the Mavor. After Cr. Todd iiad been elected he appealed to the Mayor to accept tho position. Cr. Todd (to tho Mayor): Can't you bury tho hatchet now and let us do tho best for the good of the town? You have always been known as a "sport." I appeal to you to be a "sport" now and accept the Council's verdict. The Mayor: I must tell the Council that in the past Cr. Todd has never missed a chance to oppose me. However, I will be a "'sport." I will accept him and give him full powers. Cr. Maude: Three cheers for the Mayor. These -were given while Cr. Todd and the Mayor buried their differences in a warm handshake.
