Extensive credit and j the high cost of stock, together with , a fall in lhe price of hides and skins, compelled him to assign, ,is the creditors I wore pressing. He had worked since ' as a labourer at the Blackwater mines at 14s (ki au'd 13s per day. He had a i wife and three children, two of vhoni had required medical treatment. He had no assets, and his furniture was mortgaged to the exteut of £3O to the Repatriation Department. He was unable to make any offer. An attachment order on his wages had been made by J. Collins in connexion with a judgment obtained against, him, and he was compelled to iile owing to having to pay Collins over £2 per week out of his wages. The meeting was adjourned to enable the Deputy-Official Assignee to obtain a statement, of Murphy's earnings. ! Mining Matters. The State Miue was idle to-day, and it is anticipated that work will not be resumed until Friday. A syndicate with Mr Sydney Fry as director, has been formed to derelop the Britannia gold mine, at Birchiield. Operations were commenced to-day. League Football. The following fixtures have been arranged for Sunday:— Senior.—Blackball v. Marist, at Blackball: Runanga v. Tuangahua, at Dunollie; Gieymouth v. Ron. at Omoto. Junior. —Blackball v. Brunner, at Blackball; Rovers v. Inangahua, at Blackwater: Nelson Creek v. Greymouth, at Kelson Creek; Marist v. Runanga, at Dunollie. Third Grade. —Marist v. Nelson Creek, at Omoto: Rovers v. Brunner, at. Brunner; Grevmouth v. Blackbal 1 , at Blackball. Fouith Grade.—Marist v. Runanga, fit Rapahoe. School Grade.—Brunner v. Ngahere, Nelson Creek, at Brunner; Runanga v. Blackball, at Blackball. Personal. Mr and Mrs Preston, who have given up the Kumara Junction Hotel iu order to live privately at Riccarton, were entertained by their friends and I presented with an oak clock. Mr B. R. Banks, of the accountants' branch, Wellington, has received notice of transfer to the Post Office Savings Bank, Greymouth, where lie will succeed Mr V. Peters. Miss Myrtle Nelson, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Nelson, Blaketown, will be married to Mr Robert Fisher, at St. j Patrick's Church, on July 7th. I The death occurred this morning of Mrs Sarah Goodall, aged 85 years. Deceased had resided in Greymouth for nearly 60 years, and was predeceased by her husband 16 years ago. She leaves a family of four daughters and four sons. Mr "W. T. Tregartha, Assistant-Traf-fic Manager, at Christchurch, is visiting the AVest Coast. Mr H. P. Olney will represent the Punakaiki district on the deputation to the Government with regard, to the coastal road. Beautifying Society. At a meeting of the Hokitika Beautifying Society, the secretary reported that the recent fair netted £SO. It was decided to the Kugby SubTJnion to play a benefit match, and to hold a function on Armistice Day. .
Bailway Matters. It is reported that one of the works definitely decided upon as a result of the recent visit of prominent railway officials to the Coast, is the erection at an early date of workshops at Elmer Lane. A large new locomotive recently purchased by Messrs Stuart and Chapman has arrived for use on the private line from Ross to Waitaha. Automobile Association. A meeting of the Westland branch of the Automobile Association was held last evening to welcome the delegates from Canterbury. Mr Falek detailed the Association's arrangements for the attraction of tourists to the South Island, and dealt with recent motor legislation. Mr Dobson made a strong appeal for support for the Association, and referred in reminiscent vein to the construction of the first roads on the Coast.
Mr Hawkes, Dr. Teichelmann, and others also spoke. Grey County Council. At to-day's meeting of tho Grey County Council, the salary of the Engineer, Mr J. Higgins, was increased by £IOO, and that of the Clerk, Mr M. Keating, by £SO per annum. Port of Greymouth. . Twenty-two steamers, aggregating 13,584 tons, entered the port of Greymouth during Juno, and 23, aggregating 13,924 tons, crossed the bar on their outward journey. Monthly Statistics. The Customs duties collected at Westport last month were £1787 19s Bd, as against £1730 7s lid in June, 1924. . The vital statistics were:—Births-37 (27), marriages 15 (6), deaths 15 (19). Wedding. At St. John's Church, Westport, Mr Roy Powell, of Charleston, was married to Miss Elsio Craddock, of Westport. Canon J. R. Dart officiated. Miss Rita Powell was bridesmaid, and Mr Jack Powell best man. After the ceremonv a reception was held at the Elite Tea Rooms, and the happy couple left later for Auckland, via Christchurch, on their honeymoon. Hokitika Savings Bank. The new building for the Hokitika Savings Bank, upon which work will be commenced at an early date, is to cost approximately £2500.
