SERVICE LEAGUE.

CONFERENCE AT OTTAWA. (BT CABLE-rRESS ASSOCIATIOX-COrYMGHT.) (reutee's telegrams.) OTTAWA. June 29. The re-election of Earl Haig as President of the Empire,, Service League, and of the Prince, of Wales as patron, marked the opening session of the biennial conference here. The appointment of a special committee, comprised of ex-serviee men of the Empire, to further the migration of British returned soldiers to the Dominions for settlement on the land, was recommended in a resolution moved by Commander A. P. Hett, and seconded by Sir Andrew Russell (New Zealand). Commander James Drain, of the American Legion, who was introduced by Earl Haig, referred in his speech to the British and United States peoples, stating: "We speak a common language which is the mere sound of words." The Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, in welcoming the delegates, who come from all over the Empire, urged them to go forward in their labours for preserving the peace they had fought to win. Commander Drain, in his speech, said: "You can no more have peace by wishing for it than you can change a tiger into a tom-cat." EMPIRE MIGRATION DEBATE. (EEUTER'S. TELEGRAMS.) When the question of the migration of British ex-Service men .within tho Empire was under discussion at, Monday's session of the British Empire Service League, Sir Andrew Russell (New Zealand) and others urged the need for more rapid settlement under the Empire Settlement Act. . Captain Appleby (Britain) promised that the "British Legion would select to: settlement overseas the most suitable men and. all its best women. Sir Andrew Russell pictured the mag-, nificent resources of the Empire, and said that if the British did not avail themselves of their heritage; others would. He seconded, the resolution of Commander Hett (Britain) to appoint a committee to devise the means of promoting the more rapid-migration of veterans. ■ • ■
