NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. The Loral Rangiora Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0.F.. met on Monday night, N.G. Bro. P. W. "White presiding. An application. from the local branch of the Plunket Society for the use of the lodge furniture for an entertainment "was granted. One candidate was proposed for membership and two were initiated. Reference was made to the appointment of Bro. James Miller to the office of Registrar, of the Supreme Court at Christchurch, and it was resolved to forward him a letter of congratulation. A party of visitors from the Loyal Addington Lodge and other c ity. lodges -were present/ and received a cordial welcome. The usual loyal and fraternal toasts were-honoured, and at the conclusion of the business, a card Watch was played against the visiting brethren, who were victorious by 474 Points to 423. Supper concluded a v ery pleasant evening. A meeting of the ploughing match committee was held yesterday moriiing, Mr James Wyllie presiding. The secretary reported that the entries receired for the different classes was very Poor, only 13 for the -teams section and seven for the tractor section. After a good deal of discussion it was decided that owing to the small number of entries received, and tbe wet 6tate of the ground, to abandon the match for this year. It was resolved to thank Mr W. Moir for the offer of a paddock, and to notify him that it would not now be reouired. Unfavourable weather conditions interfered with the attendance at the fortnightly card soc ; al held in connexion with the bowling, tennis, and croquet club and progressive 500 was playorl. The prizes, which wer« given by Mrs C. I. Jemnnsrs. and Mrs M. Scott were won by Mrs G. Dickson and Mr L. Chanpell. A meeting- of tv-e Methodist congregation was held on Monday to consider the of the annual flower show and luncheon. It was dec'ded to hold tbo function some time in September. Sub-committees were appointed, and Mr W. A. Rowse was appointed secretarv.
On Monday, a surprise nartv visited the residence of Mr and Mrs E. Grimwood, Aslilev street. Dinning, games, and competitions were induVed in. The w'nners of the com»ptitions were Misses M. O'Neill. Jenkins. L. Cox, and Messrs J. Harereaves. E. Griniwood, V. Luisette and A. Harper. SPENCERVILLE. A very successful progressive euchre match and dance, was held in the school. The prizes were won by Miss Mary Farrell, after playing off with Miss Hazel Wilkinson, and Mr Charles Griffith. The music for the dance was supplied by Miss Sullivan (Waimate), Miss> Jean McMillan (Ouruhia), and Mr Charles Craw (Little Akaloa). Mr B. R.. Dunlop was M.C. The gramophone fund in aid of which the' social was held will benefit to the extent of £1 16s 3d. ' •■■-■,' The) Chrirch services which have been inaugurated by the Rev. G. B. Nariseni, of' Belfast, commenced on Sunday last, and -in spite of the weather, there was a very fair attendance.
KIMBERLEY. There was a good attendance at the dance held in the local hall. Excellent music was supplied by Mr W. Bettel (piano), and Mr W. East (banjolinc). Extras were supplied by Mr A. Hart. IRWELL. The Invell school was filled with pupils and householders on the occasion of a social to the headmaster, Sir T. E. Eggleton, who is leaving to take up % an appointment at Waltham schuol. A musical programme was contributed by Misses Webster, G. Brooks, Simpson, Mrs J. Coe, and Mr Mitchell. The folldwing pupils also took part:—Francis Reid, Dorothy Brooks, Bessie (Stephens, Jovce Brooks, Jim Green. Mr Egpjleton's last official act in connexion ' with the school > was to awaru badges to members of the Young Helpers' League, who hold collection boxes for Dr. Bcrnardd's Homes/ lhe winners were Marion Stephens, William Bavlis, Laurie Goe, and T. Eggleton. On behalf of the householders, Mr J. Brooks presented to Mv Eggletonthe key of a roll-top desk, which they had decided to have delivered t 0 his new home, and to Mrs Eggleton he handed a rose bowl. Messrs T. A. Stephens. R.-'T- McMillan, and H. Bliss expressed their good wishes to .the guests. Mr Eggleton suitably replied. On behalf of the Cricket Club, Mr L. B. Coo handed Mr Eggleton a pipe, and conveyed the. good wishes of his fellow cricketers. The latter part of the evening was, spent in dancing.
SOUTHBRIDGE. There a crowded house at a concert given at Southbridge in aid of the school piano fund. The programme was given mainly hy the school children, but several adults assisted in the second half. The items were as follows:—Pianoforte duet, Victoria Butler arid Jessie Gilbert; song, the infants; recitation, Patty Bennett; song, Standards I. and 11. girls; recitation, Maureen Kilbride; Nigger song, Standards I. and 11. boys; sword dance, S. McOartin and A. Chapman; song, Betty Eggleton; dialogue, Standards 111. and IV. :• dance, Sylvia Bennett; duet, BeUy Eggleton and David Bennett; recitation, Hampton Bennett; song, Betty Eggleton, Joyce and Nell Beamsley; * Dutch dance. Ina Bruce; song, P. Murphy and P. Pollock; recitation, Harold Hill; pianoforte solo, Jessie Gilbert; sketch in character, secondary pupils. The adult performers were' Misses Griffiths, Mason, Jones and Bruce. The chairman of the school committee, Mr A. McPherson, presented the primary dux medal to Annio and the .Durward Memorial essay prize to Victoria Butler. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district, and dancing was indulged in .until early morning. The financial result exceeded the committee's expectations.
SCARGILL. Thcro was a very largo gathering,of local residents in the Alexandra Hall at a farewell (social given to Mr and Mrs John McNaughten and family, who are leaving the district. Mr McNaughten has held tho position of manager of the. Foxdown Estate for tho past five years, and is well known in. sheep-breeding circles. The first part of the evening was devoted to cardplaying. At 9.30 a very enjoyable musical programme was "commenced, those contributing being: Miss Ryan, piano solo; songs by Mesdanies E. Gardner, J. Rvan and E. Foster and Mr T. O. Johnson; duets by Mrs Foster and Mr Johnson; recitations by Mrs J. H. Jones and Mr E. Harrison, and some GaluVOurci records were played, lent by Mr Greig. Mr K. Lochhead, in making the presentation of a Kaiapoi rug to Mrs McNaughten, and a leather suitcase to Mr McNaughten,' on behalf of the residents of the Scargill district, referred to the tvery high esteem in which they were held, and tho general feeling of regret at their . departure, and wished them health and prosperity in the future in bidding them farewell. Mr E. Gardner spoke on behalf of the immediate neighbours of the guests of the evening, and referred to their excellent qualities as neighbours. The president of the Scargill Branch of the Farmers' Union, Mr W. J. Leach, also spoke, referring to Mr McNaiughten's assistance in various matters as a member of the branch, and also to his success as a breeder of sheep, having "topped" th* market at tho last Amberley Ewe-Fair for two-tooth ewes with' a line from Foxdown. Other speakers were Mr N. Stewart (Glenmark Football Club) ; Mr A. D Fox (Foxdown employees), Mr G. A. Greig (Scargill Miniature Rifle Club), and Mr E. Harrison, who also took the opoortunity of welcoming to the district Mr and Mrs W. Scott and family. Mr McNaughten, who was received with musical . honours, very suitably responded. Supper -was handed round, and dancing wasv commenced, continuing till 2 a.m. to music supplied by Mrs Lamont a,nd Messrs Fairbairn and Greig, Mr N. Stewart acting as M.O. _ . • The opportunity was taken during the-evening by Mr W. J. Leach, vicepresident of the Scargill Tennis Club, of .making a presentation of a Kaiapoi rug to the secretary, Mr G. A. Greig, Mr Leach to the work that had been done during the three years that Mr Greig has held tihe honorary office of secretary to the club, and on behalf of the _ members had much pleasure in making the. presentation ah a token of their appreciation of his services. Mr Greig briefly thanked the members of the club for their valuable gift.
LINCOLN. The Ladies' Guild of the Presbyterian Church held an arts and crafts evening, to raise funds towards a bazaar for painting the church. A large number of arti"les was entered. The following were the prize-winners: Adults, Mrs Caldwell (rag mat); children, Noleen Thwaites (toy caravan). Miss Boyd won the flower competition. The articles were judged by Misses M. and B. Taylor. Songs were contributed by Miss Taylor and Mr. Mackintosh, and a quartet by Mesdames Robertson and Thwaites and Rev. F. Robertson and Mr L. Thwaites. Miss D. White played the accompaniments. ' Various games and competitions were indulged in "and supper was'provided. The weekly dances in aid of the Recreation Ground were continued lastSaturday, the music being, supplied by Mr Terry.
LAKESIDE. At, a meeting of householders on Monday evening, the following committee' was elected for the Lakeside school:—Messrs W. J. Nairn ' (chairman), T. H. Overton, G.-Nairn, G.S. Manson, A.; E. Amyes. ;.:/. OMIHI. At the weekly euchre tournament the prizes were won by Mrs Hall and Mr Ferguson. An enjoyable dance was held in : the Hall last week. Music was' supplied by Mrs Ferguson and Mr W. Hall. Tho old adage that the cold strengthens as the days lengthen, has proved only too true this season," as the last week has been' exceptionally disagreeable and wintry. Mr Paynter, the Government Orchard. Instructor, gave a pruning demonstration at the local orchard, when a miniher of interested spectators, including the s-cnior pupils, attended, and'gained ir.ost valuable information.
PREBBLETON. Another step in the direction of progress is the placing of suitable points in the township, of electric * lights, which are of great assistance to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Attracted no doubt partly by. the value of the prizes offered, and : to a greater extent by the cause for which it was held, there was a very large and representative attendance at the benefit euchre tournament organised by Mr James Smith, which was held in the Public Hall. Brand new bicycles were the prizes offered in both sections, and theso were won by Mrs T. Traskjof Ladbrooks, and Mr P. Prendcrgast, of Prebbleton, while second prizes were awarded to Mrs F. Kolknian, Halswcll, and. Mr V. Ayers, Prebbleton. Consolation prizes were received by Miss CtHcs, Prebbleton, and Mr T. Smith, Lincoln; The minor prizes and the supper were the gifts of lady sympathisers. ..For tho danco which followed, spirited' music was provided by Miss Mabel Griffiths, while the duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr J. Smith. The Hall Committee's weekly euchre tournaments continue to attract a 'urge number of players. The prize-winners at the last one held on Saturday evening were:—Ladies: Mrs W. Goodwin 1, Mrs Middleton 2. Gentlemen: Mr Geo. Thompson 1, Mr Geo. Millar 2. Miss M. Griffiths was tho pianist for the danco which followed.
GLENTUNNEL. The Glontunnel Domain Board held a public meeting for the ; purpose of filling the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr J. It. Longstaff. Mr \V. W. Leeming, \chajirmaii of the Board, presided, and there was a fair attendance. Messrs G. D. Marsh, C. Po«ell, and L. Workman were nominated, and the first-named elected. At a subsequent meeting of the Board, it was decided to take action against anyone putting stock on the Domain without the authority of the Board. The South Malvern Cycling arid Athletic Club held a very enjoyable social and dance in the Glentunnel Public Hall, at which the Harwood Cup was presented to the winner, Mr Thomas Brown, of Coalgate. The president, Mr Charles Stuart, made the presentation, and Mr J. J. Harwood also spoke, congratulating the winner on his achievement, aad giving the respective points of the other riders. Mr Brown suitably responded. Songs were sung by Messrs" D. Hartstonge, T Simpson, R. wills, and W. B. Willsteed. Mrs W. F. Owen played the accompaniments, and also the music for the dancing. Extras were played by the Misses Bisphan and Gilmour. AKAROA. , Prior to her departure from Akaroa, Mrs A. J. Allom was entertained by the lady members of the Golf Club, and presented with a small token of esteem and' goodwill.
* HORORATA. : A meeting of the Hororata branch of the ■ Farmers' Union was held in tho hall, there being a small "attendance of members. Mr H. Oliver presided. Mr W. S. Pratt's resignation as secretary was accepted with regret. Mr "W. 11. Oliver was appointed secretary. A series of lectures for the winter "is to be arranged by the president, Mr H. .Oliver. On Friday quite a number of parents and friends gathered with the children a{i the school, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Pratt, who are leaving the district. An enjoyable programme was given by the children, as follows: Pianoforte duet, Phyllis Critchlev and Thelma Maffey; song, little children; recitation,' Marjorie McKenzie; song, Phyllis Critchiey; song, by the grids: and a play entitled "Umbrella Land." which caused much laughter. Mav Fuller then asked Mr Pratt to accept a. case of' pipes, with th* children's best wishes. Words of appreciation were spoken .by Mr Bruce (chairman of the school committed.' Master Alex. Ironside spoke on behalf of the school children, thanking Mr Pratt for the interest he had taken in them and also their sport. Mr Pratt, in returning thanks, said he had always tried to do his best for the' children. Elma Felton then presented Mrs Pratt with a Doulton jug, Robert Ballagh giving little Keith Pratt a book and Alister Bruce handed Patricia Pratt a book (the books being the gifts of Mrs T. B: Jones). Mr Pratt suitably resnorided on behalf of his wife and chitdren. Before afternoon ten. was- dispensed. Mr Bruce presented first grade attendance certificate* to Edna Gray, Ale"x. The Hororata School Committee have . appointed. Mr Geo. Emerson Cartwright of' Waimataitai, as headmaster. He takes -up his new. duties on August Ist. Mrs Jones, of Central Otneo, is visiting her sister, _Mrs H. Parker. The progressive eu-hre tournament, (run by the Hnll Committee) was attended on Saturday night, the prizes being awarded to the following:—Ladies. Mrs J. Wilson 1,. Mrs Timmings 2: ge'ntlemen's,. Mr L. Mooar 1, Mrs T. Murfitt 2. The attendance at the football match on Saturday between Ashburton and Malvern was very lar<re, £l4 -beimg taken at the gate. Ashburton won by 15 noints to 6.
The conditions reigning for the playing off of the Owen Cup were rather unfavourable. The play resulted »n a win for Mrs McGarry. M ; ss Bvsrih being runner-up. .Afternoon tea. was dispensed by the ladies.
LE BON'S BAY. The local football team journeyed by lorry on Saturday to Little River to play a match against the Little River Maoris. After a. well-fought contest, the Maoris scored three tries, converts ing one, all in the- second half. Owing to the thick fog the passengers in the lorry on the return journey preferred to walk from the Okain's Saddle. instead of risking the lorry trip even at I'a snail'srpace. ■'"•"■.; : ' k The weather has heen very wintry /for the - last few days; . Both Saturday arid Sunday were intermittently' showery; .while a regular downpour continued throughout Monday .v.", ■ . -Mrs H, Partington has returned to .the Bay after a short holiday in : Tai ( . BAY. An open . evening of the Boys' Athenawm on Friday. There was a large attendance. DrJ T. "Wyld Pairma4 gave an address on "Vital Ehythms," which was closely listened to; After the lecture ' a number of questions were answered. Miss Wiida Harris gave a French T<;.\diiig and short recitation: Mr Frank Newstcad a violin solo; Mr Horace Crow a solo on the clarinet; and Mis Welsh a Scottish recitation. The orchestra played a- number of selections at frequent intervals. MvE. Fraser proposed a vote of thanks to the lecturer and the performers, which was carried by acclamation. ELLESMERE. The fortnightly euchic and dar.ee waa held last week. The prizes were won by Miss Evelyn Burt (supper cloth), and Mr A.- Leslie (tobacco pouch). Aiter supper the floor was cleared for dancing, music being' supplied by Miss Phyllis Blford, with extras by Mr K. Walls, Mrs T. Cl?[hane, and Miss M. Elford. During the evening a song was givon by Mrs J. Long, of Soiwyu.
KIRWEE. The members of the Courtonay Social Club, accompanied by a few friends, a surprise visit to the residence of l<lr and' Mrs D. "W. Finlay, who had recently married. A euchre match was played, the prizes being won by Mrs H. Foster, and Mr C. Page. Tho ladies qprved a very dainty supper. During the evening, Mr C. Page,, on behalf of those present, asked Mr and *.irs Finlay to accept a handsome silvermounted oak tray, suitably inscribed, and expressed a hope that they would enjoy a long and happy life togehtcr.
HURUNUI RABBIT BOARD. . - ♦— — • The monthly meeting /of tW Hurunui Rabbit Board' was held at Hawai'den on Friday, there being' present Messrs James Heasley (in tho chair), W. Hanmer Atkinson, W. J. McMillan, J. Munro and J. Sloss.; It was resolved that the strengthening of a portion of the Hanmef Fence be left over until the next meeting. Mr Sloss* explained the difficulty that, the Inspector at Motunau had experienced in obtaining a section on wihich to run his horse, and it was hoped that a satisfactory arrangement could bo made before the next meeting. A stoekowner in the district had written, for: permission to use rabbit traps on a small portion of his property which had been poisoned twice, and -t •wag decided to refer the matter to the Board's Inspector, who .will interview the owner. ' ; The Inspector reported on the difficulties which, had cropped up in regard to the Board's rabbiters, more especially in : reference to cartridges; and it was decided that the property owners in future supply their own cartridges to the rabbiters, who will then have only. their time worked on the properties* to account for. The Board will arrange to supply the cartridges to tho owners. It was decided to write to the Government Stock „ Inspector -at Rotherham in reference to a report received about a property , adjacent. to the Boards' district.
Tho treasurer (Mr W. J. McMillan) gave notice of motion for the next meeting as follows: —"That a uniform rate of one halfpenny per head on sheep and twopence halfpenny per head Oil cattle be struck throughout the whole of the Htirunui Rabbit Trustees' •district for the year onding. December 31st, 1925.-' The reports of the inspectors a»d caretakers for the niohth wcro considered, and it was resolved that seven properties in tho district be placed under notice immediately.
Tho Inspector was instructed to arrange for ;i general poisoning to takeplace, commencing about August Ist, throughout the whole district.
