ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. The electric power from Lake Coleridgo was interrupted by the snowstorm about 8 a.m. yesterday, and the standby plant of tho Ashburton power-house had to be put into operation. The break was discovered about 1 p.m., however, and, repairs were effected, • Tho senior and junior classes being conducted under the auspices of tho Ashburton Boxing Association aro proving very satisfactory, and tho aspirants arc showing great promise. If the interest that is being taken in tho classes at tho prosent time continues, tho Association would bo justified in establishing the classes permanently. The Association is hopeful of staging another tournament about tho middle of nest month. Mail Notices. Mails close -to-day for northern -ports at Ashtmrton at 5 p.m.; lata fee, 5.25 p.m.; guard's van, 5A3 p.m. PROMQRE. Tho fortnightly progressive ' euchro tournament took place last week, when there was a good attendance. Mrs Merritt and lira Chambers (Fairton) tied for first place, with U games, and in the play-off Miss Chambers won. For tbo gentlemen's prize, Messrs J. Blackburn, E. Langley, and H. Copland tied with 13 games, and in the play-off Mr J. Blackburn won. Mr W. Field controlled tho gamos. After supper a danoe was held, the musio being provided by Mr Bosking. PENDARVES. Last week's fine weather enabled farmers to make good progress with the drilling of wheat and oats, which had been delayed by the heavy frosts of the previous week. On Saturday morning another heavy frost was experienced, which was followed by ram. This became heavier towards ev«m» in<* and continued throughout Sunday. Th"» present winter is proving mora severe than titd two previous seasons. The monthly progressive euchro tournament was held by the Hall Cominit-tc-i on FTiday evening, when there was a very large attendance. Tho ladies first prize, which was presented by Miss Emily Hampton, /was won by Miss 0. Clark, with 112' points. Tho second prize wap won by Miss Alma "Watson with 104 points, but as this prize had been given by Miss Watson herself, she handed it to the next in order. Mrs R. Gnco, who had secued 103 points. Tho ffcntlo. men's first prize was won by Mr 1. Flynn (Chertsey), with 128 points. For tho second prize (also given by Miss Emily Hampton), Messrs L. Scott and A. Eankin tied, and in the play-off Mr Scott won. After supper a dance waß held, tho music being supplied by Misses E. King, A. Watson, I. Halliday and Mr E. Rankin.
SPRINGBURN. For several years.tho County Council has boon trying, to sell a plantation of piuus radiata at A3hburton Forks, but prospective purchasers have,always considered the cartage from the plantation to the nearest railway station or town too formidable an item*. Howover, a sawmilling plant was unloaded at Springburo last week and proceeded to Asbburton Forks with the object of 'turning the plantation into timber and firewood. The plantation is a wellmatured one with particularly straight trees, and compares well with other county-owned " plantations scattered throughout mid-Canterbury. MOUNT SOMEBS. On Saturday evening a slight mishap occurred at the/local railway station whoa the evening train came in. By aorao means one of the doors of the goods-shed was closed, and not being noticed in the dark, a long lino of trucks was pushed through, derailing three waggons and doing much damage to the door. On Saturday evening the local Mrniaturo Eifle Club sent a team of 14 mon over to Mothven to flre the first round for tho County Shield. Unfortunately, just as tho first shots wore about to bo fired, the Coleridge power failed, and did not como. on again all the ovoning. This week a ten-target postal match may bo fired with Wost Melton. St, Stephen's Men's Club, Ashburton, has challenged the local club to a debate and a ping-pong tournament. RAKAIA. A return football match between tho Dorio team and a Eakaia third grade team wa3 played on tho Domain on Saturday afternoon. The day was a disagroeablo one, and good football was out of th& question. The forwards dominated the game, which resulted in n. win for Eakaia by 9 points to 3. Trios were scored lor Eakaia by E. Mead, H. O'EoiUy, and T. Greygooso. G. Smith scored for Dorie. Mr A. Shannon was referee. After tho match tho Dorie toam was entertained to afternoon tea by the Eakaia Club. Mr G, E\-ison, on behalf of Eakaia, welcomed tho visitors, and complimented' them on their play. Mr D. McDonald returned thanks for tho Dorie team. . Miss M. Morrison is at prcseut acting as relieving infant mistress at the Eakaia public school in place of Miss Clark, who is absent on sick leave.
