NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. A meeting of the Rangiora Poultry Committee was held on Saturday, Mr T. S. Hanna being in tho chair. The secretary reported that the Railway Department had agreed to carry back to Christchurch all exhibits after tho show. The Rangiora High School's offer to make a special exhibit of roots and grain was accepted. Tho monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held on Friday. Mrs Thwaites presided over a fair attendance. It was decided to send a donation of 10s to tho creche that is to be conducted by the Union at the Dunedin Exhibition. Mrs Thwaites reported that a very successful meeting in the interests of nolicense had been held at Waikuku, Mrs T. E. Taylor being the speaker. As "White Ribbon Day" is celebrated at the June meeting, Mrs Richards, of Christchurch, gave a stirring address, taking as her theme tho motto of the Union: "For God, home, and humanity." A vote of thanks was accorded tho speaker. A collection was taken up in aid of the work among the Maoris. Tho silver cup presented by Mr L. IT. Blain to the Rangiora Cricket Club for the best batting average was won by Mr F. A. Smith; the silver-mounted ball presented, by Mr A. P. Strang for the best bowling average in the senior team, by W. R. Barwick; and the trophy presented by the patron (the Hon. D. Buddo, M.P.), for the most promising member of the junior team, by P. Roberts. KAIKOURA. At the annual meeting of tho Kaikoura Beautifying Society, Mr It. Gibson presided. The report and balancesheet, tho. latter showing a small credit balance,. were adopted. Regarding the destruction done by wandering cattle at the bathing sheds, Mr G. E. Parsons moved- that the Council be asked to enforce the by-laws respecting wandering stock in the town area. The motion was carried. . The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Pattarn, Mr .G. W. Forbes, M.P.; president, Mr It. Gibson; vice-presidents, Messrs A. Gooch, S. J. Mogridge and E. W. Flower; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Murray; auditor, Mr A. Goocli; committee, Mrs J. "Washington, Rev. Dunn, Messrs J. Davidson, E. Cates, T. Barry, J. R. Sweeney, 0. Reeves, G. E. Parsons, H. Osborne, and L. Shannon. The subscription was fixed at 2s 6d per annum. Mr Parsons) stated that he had been in communication with Mr C. Woods (Christchurch) and Mr A. J. Murray (Woodbank) regarding the Kaikoura Mounted Rifles Fund of £OOO. The former had expressed his willingness to endorse anything Mr Murray might propose. Mr Miirray had undertaken to call, tho I members of the Kaikoura Mounted Rifles together and decide the question of the disposal of the funds, and no doubt a meeting would take place at an early date. Messrs R.. J. Sweeney. H. Osborne, S. J. Mogridge, and E. W. Flower were appointed to arrange for means of supplementing! the funds of the society by art unions or otherwise. Dr. G. I. Miller, who has acted a& locum tenens for Dr. Withers during the latter's absence abroad, will leave Kaikoura next week. After spending a holiday with his parents in Dunedin, he will probably go to England and Scotland. A rmblio send-off will be extended to Dr.'.Miller and a welcome given to Dr. Withers on his return to .Kaikoura. Mrs, John Lyford gave an; afternoon as St. Peters's Schoolroom in aid of the Vicarage Fund. Musical items and ; competitions were indulged in, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Mrs Comer also gave an afternoon for the same nurpose, the function proving a thorough success.

LEITHFIELD. The fortnightly euchre and . dance, held on Saturday evening in aid of the library funda was welt attended. The prizes were won by Mrs W.. Jamieson and Mr F. WAIPARA. After a couple of days of bright, sunny weather, accompanied by nor'westers, very 'wintry 'weather conditions prevailed in this district. Bain set in after the frost on Saturday morning, and the ground is very "wet and the roads are in a sodden condition. A meeting of the Waipara branch of the Plunket Nursing Division was held in the Public Hall. Mrs "Williams (Sumner) gave an interesting address on "The Effects of Alcohol on the Human Body, and its Bearings on the Plunket Xursing System." Mrs Cameron (president) passed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Williams. A vote of thanks was also accorded to Mrs Pittaway, who has kindly given a room for the use of the district nurse during the winter months. Much regret was expressed in the Waipara district at the news of the death of little Mary Morrison, a former pupil of the local school, who passed away at the Christchurch Hospital on Wednesday night, at the early age of ten years. Deceased was the eldest daughter of Mr M. Morrison, of Bangiora, and was a bright, intelligent little girl, and a general favourite. CUST. The football and basketball teams of the Cust School went down to Fernside on Thursday afternoon to play the Fernside School. The boys were successful by 9 points to 0. The girls had a runaway victory, the final score beiug 78 points to 8. After the match the teams were hospitably entortained to tea by Mesdames Holliday, Milne and Hinton, and the Misses Milne. The football team lepresenting the combined schools in: the primary schools' competition was picked. They played their first match on Saturday morning at Cust against Oxford, and suffered defeat by 3 points to nil. The senior football team were drawn against Oxford at Cust on Saturday. The ground was very heavy and slippery, and the ball difficult to handle. The result was a draw, 3 points each. The juniors travelled to Oxford, and in a rough and tumble game were very unlucky to be defeated by 7, points to 6. • A meeting of the ladies of the PreS; byterian Church was held on Friday to make arrangements for a "briiyr and buy" afternoon'in aid of the building fund. It was decided to hold the function in the Oddfellows' Hall. Mrs Wayland was appointed secretary. LITTLE RIVER. The members of the Little River Croquet Club met in the Coronation Library to bid farewell to the captain, Mrs J. Palmer, who is leaving the district. The prizes in the euchre, tournament were won. by Aliss Olive Patten, and Mr H. Lewthwaite. Several games were played during the evening and a novel'competition'was won by Mr H. Members were asked to reconsider their original' idea' of building a Memorial Hall, substituting for it a new Memorial Church. The president pointed out the need .of a new church, and although a hall for Sunday School and' church meetings was .needed, a church really was a. gerater need. After a lengthy discussion it was agreed that tho money should go towards the • building fund of a new xiarish church as a memorial to the men of tho district who had fallen; in the war. During the afternoon a x>resentation was made to Mrs J. Palmer, who is going to reside in Ghristchurch. Mr Stych, on behalf of the Guild and Mothers' Union, asked Mrs Palmer to accept a. casp of silver fish knives and forks as a stinll token of their esteem. Mrs Palmer had been a great worker for the Guild and they would greatly miss her capable assistance. He felt certain' that whatever friends Mrs Palmer made in tho. future she would riot forget her Little River friends. Mrs Palmer, after thanking the Guild for their splendid gift, as-' sured them that no present was necessary to remind her of her Little River friends. LADBROOKS. The Ladbrooks Town Hall Committee is making arrangements for a fancydress and masquerade ball. Owing to the success of the different functions held in the hall, it has been decided to make considerable alterations to cope with tho demand'for accommodation. Mr A. E. Trask has accepted a position in Hawera. The Misses C. and S. Walsh, of Eltham, who have been spending a lengthy holiday with friends and relatives in Ladbrooks, returned home last week. Miss Inez MePherson, of Southbridge, who was on a visit/to Mr and Mrs Roscoe, returned home last week. Mr and Mrs M. Fitzgibbons, of Loburn, are paying a visit to Mr and Mrs Costello. The girls of the Tai Tapu and Ladbrooks Schools played a very keenly contested basketball match at Ladbrooks on Friday last, the home team winning by 52 points to 32. WEST MELTON. The first of a series of fortnightly dances,was held in the new hall last Friday evening, the object being to raise funds to pay off the debt.remaining on the hall. The music was supplied by Mrs Hayes, Misses Iris Chambers, A, Langdale-Hunt, and J. Thompson. Mr G. Jowers was M.C. * The Miniature Rifle Club fired the final shoot for a trophy, presented. by Mr Hawke, on Saturday evening. In the shoot-off A. I AKAROA. The Sunbeam Concert Party visited Akaroa on Saturday and gave a performance in the Oddfellows' Hall for the benefit of the District High School's ground improvement fund. There iras a crowded audience. During, an interval, the Mayor (Mr G. Armstrong) warmly thanked the little company for its excellent work, and expressed to them and their manager, Mr Caverhill, the appreciation of* all concerned. The members of the party were, entertained at . supper by the school committee, and were then billeted for the night. , SPRINGSTON. A very enjoyable evening was spent recently at the residence of Mr and Mrs S. Kcast to celcbrpto the coming-of-nge of their eldest 'daughter, Elsie. The function was held in the granary, which had been decorated with greenery and flowers. Games, eompettions, >ind dancing made the time pass nil too quickly. ' Items were contributed .by Mrs J. Carter, Misses E. and W. Kcast, M. Carter, K. and A. Wilson, Messrs S. Kcast, H. Hoskin, R. Rickerby, and J. Carter. The guest of the evening, who wore a crimson- velvet frock trim.med with black marabout, was the recipient of many beautiful presents. Mr H. Hoskin expressed the good wishes of those present. The seventh of the series of euchre arid dances was held in the hall on Saturday. There was n very large attendance of players, all the tables being taken up. The winners proved to be Mrs Riordan and Mr G-. Tyson, the latter after playing off with Mr L. Staee, After supper had been partaken of, the hall was cleared and a daiice held. Mr Bob Wall supplied the music. Mr Bailey (chairman of the committee) announced that.a match would be played with the Springston South Social Club in the Spriugston South Memorial Hall. • . After a week of dull weather, rain began to fall on Saturday evening, and continued throughout Sunday. Water is lying in'the paddocks in large quantities., The springs are also very high, which helps to account. for the large quantities of water lying about. Young lambs are now to be seen on several farms in the district, and no doubt some of these will be ready for . the market' in Grand National week. j The local stationmaster, Mr Lee, is away on his annual holiday, and his duties are being carried out by Mr Cameron.

SPRINGSTON SOUTH. There was a large attendance at the Social Committee's weekly euchre and dance which was held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday. The prizes were won by Mrs E. Arnst (half-dozen dessert spoons) and Mr C. Kimber (cycle tube). After supper had been handed round, the room was cleared for dancing, the music being supplied by Mr and Mrs Quaife, whilst Mr A. Payne officiated as M.C. The School Committee have arranged for a""working bee" to cart soil on to the playground to level it up. The Social Committee received a challenge last week from the Springston Druids' Committer) to a card match, and decided to accept it. Mr T. J. Kimber, secretary of tho .Springston Gun Club, left on Saturday evening for Marten, where, he will be a competitor in the clay bird championship. DOYLESTON. Misses It. O'Boyle and 0. Foster, who organised a euchre party and dance at Doyleston, were awarded by a very successful evening. The prizes were won by Mrs Williams and Miss 31. MoCarti)! and Messrs AV. O'Boyle and F. McCabe. The Rev. Father Creed presented the prizes. At the dance following, Mr W. O'Boyle was M.C., and Mrs R. Larnbie pianist. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Marion Fisher and Mr R. Donald. The proceeds go to the funds of the Altar Society of the Leeston Roman Catholic Church.
