MAGISTRATE'S COURT. (special to "the press.") GREYMOUTH, June 29. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presided at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Julia Maria Siriith (Mr W. J. Joyce) proceeded against John Smith for £l4, arrears of maintenance. An order was made : for the payment of tho arrears at tho rate of 5s per week. S. C. Moss, of Napier, was ordered to pay off at the rate of 2s 6d per week arrears of £33 in respect of an order for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Evidence was heard in the application by James Keeney, of Kotorua, for a maintenance order against, his wife, Ellen Keeney, of Cobden. The hearing will be resumed at Botorua on July 20th. Thomas Skilton (Mr Joyce) pleaded guilty to a charge of using abusive language to John Ralph Taylor, underviewer at tho Eoa mine. Mr J. W. Hannan appeared for the informant, Alphonsus O'Donnell. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs. The Weather. No rain fell to-day, but the weather was very dull and threatening. The ranges in the vicinity of Greymouth are carrying a mantle of white, snow having fallen on tho higher levels. The total rainfall to 9 o'clock this morning was 2.44 inches, 1.46 inches being the fall for the previous 24 hours. Mining Matters. Work will bo resumed at the Eoa mine to-morrow, a satisfactory adjustment of the differences between the company and the men over the dismissal of a miner having been arrived at last week at "Wellington, when repre-sentatives-of the Miners' Council conferred with the mine-owners. Tunnel Traffic.
Traffic through the Otira tunnel from west to east continues to be heavy. For the week ending .Tune 13th, the gross weight of the-trains, exclusive of engines, was 8262 tons, and for the following wcok 7907 tons, whilo the following figures give tho tonnage since June 21st:—Juno 22nd, 1376; 23rd, .1665; 24th, 1306; 25th, 1346. Telephone Services. Sir James Parr, Postmaster-General, has advised the secretary of the Reefton Progress League that, pending the completion of the Nelson-Murchison-Reefton metallic circuit, the .Department proposes to rearrange the existing telephone lines and reduce the number of switching stations with the object of improving communication 1 with the Maruia district. County Works. The Grey County has accepted the tender of Hallum and party for tho construction of the Big River-Rough River road. The Minister of Minos has approved a vote of £4OO for. repairs to the Dunganville-Marsden road. Authority has been received for the expenditure of £SOO for ro-metalling tho Kotuku-Bell Hill road. Train Delayed "by Horse. A horso which caught its legs between the sleepers on tho railway line near South Beach delayed the late train from .Hokitika on Saturday evening. Ultiniatey the animal extricated itself and fell over a bank, landing on its back 15ft below, and tho train was able to proceed. How the horso fared was not ascertained. LEAGUE FOOTBALL. (srECIAI, TO "THE FHEBB.") m, , ,■ , u., GRE YMOUTH, June 29. The fortnightly meeting of the West Coast Rugby League was .held to-night, Mr A. H. Mckane presiding. The chairman, secretary, and Mr J. Thomas were appointed delegates to meet the United Ciuh with reference to *he pavilion. The custodian reported that twelve blue jerseys had been procured for referees. It was resolved to make- arrangement's for better reports of League matches played at Auckland, and for the telegraphing of representative teams. . The secretary was authorised to make arrangements with Mr Wingham to have the Jesuits of games played, during the Australian tour cabled to Greymouth. It was decided to- award the Robertson Cup for the third grade Knock-out Competition. Air J. Thomas was appointed to the Postponement Committee. The secretary was instructed to write thcnkiiig the Canterbury League for suppcrriug tha nomination of Mr J. D. Wingham as manager of the New Zealand team. A letter was received from tjo Jvm-.>r Advisory Board, Canterbury Centre, asking whether arrangements could be made for billeting a sixth grade team to visit Greymouth, and whether it was intended to send a junior representative team to Canterbury this year. The secretary was instructed to state that enquiries would be made with regard to l.iilcting the visitors, and that the matter of sending a junior team to Canterbury was at present the subject of correspondence with the Canterbury Centre. Ho was also instructed to write asking whether the Canterbury Centre or clubs iintended sending third grade ! teams to the Coast this year, as the play 1 was of a particularly high standard in this ' grade. It was resolved that in the event of a club or clubs playing members whose transfers had not been approved, the matches be awarded to the opposing teams. | The secretary was instructed to ascertain whether the Itoa Club's challenge for the Irvine Shield was in order. A letter was received from the Linwood Football Ciub asking whether the League would entertain a visit in September from '■ a filth grade team. It was re3oived to < ascertain the weight and age of members < of the team. j A resolution was carried against the re- I playing of the Runanga-Nelson Creek junior | match. I Seven new players were registered. The Greymouth and Marist Ciubg were I each fined 5s for the late arrival of teams.
