Training allowances to women teachers was touched upon by the University Commission at Wellington on Friday. "Do you think." asked the chairman (Sir Harry Reichel), "that it is a good thing for the State to pursue this costly method of training women, with the certainty that many of them will leave, through marriage and other causes, before there is a prospect of their becoming of any use to the service?" Professor Tennant: "It is a question whether the State should go to the financial extent to which it does at present. With a reasonable system of allowance, I do not think the State would lose seriously. A few give up teaching after a year or two, but they still remain a credit to the community as a whole." "No allowance is paid for learning law, medicine, or engineering," remarked the chairman. "The reason is obvious," replied Professor Tennant; "it is because, in those professions, the remuneration is soon such that the cost of Jcarniug is handsomely repaid." Sir H. Reichel: "Would' it not then be better to make tho higher branches of teaching so well paid that people would be glad to devote money to training for them?" "Most certainly," said Professor Tennant. "I do not think the material has improved in proportion jas the amount of the allowance has increased."
