Many thousands lined tho banks of tho Parramatta. River in fino, dull weather to witness the contest for the ■world's sculling 'championship betvreen Jifajor Goodsell and P. Hannan. A south-west breeze was blowing and militated against both men's chances. For a- niile and a-half thereafter the turn ■ of-tho river put them out of its range. ' Both tvere in perfect, condition, although Goodsell looked the better of the two. When the pistol went Goodsell caught the water first and shot ahead, hut Hannan, in the first sixty yards, drew letrel. This was the only time the New Zealander was on terms with the champion. Goodsell was" rowing twenty-eight to the minute to Hannan's thirty and established a lead of four lengths, which he maintained throughout. "When the first two hundred yards were passed Goodsell had a lead of rivo ' lengths. Hannan, who appeared distressed, although tho pace was an easy one, hero spurted and decreased the Australian's lead to live lengths. Hannan at this time was rowing twenty-nine to the minute. The burst was only a flash in the pan, but Hannan continued to make strenuous efforts to reduce his opponent's" lead. It was a vain effort, Goodsell keeping ■, in advance and apparently rowing without -afcrain. H© kept well in tho -lead •until near tho finish, when he eased 'up and tvon by three lengths. His time was 21m 31s. The first mile was covered in 6m 4s. Hannan's time was . 21m 355. Tho racs was disappointing to Hnnnan's supporters, as the New Zealander never once looked like a wanner.
