KAIAPOI. Tli© Hinemoai Ladies' Hockey Club held its annual dance in the Drill Hall on Friday evening. The hall was prettily decorated in tho club colours, black and white, relieved with gaily coloured butterflies. Music for the dancing was provided by Johnston's Jazz Band. E. "Broadley, B. "Waters, and A. iSchimanslii acted as M.C.'s. Luckv spot dances were won by Mrs M. .belcher and Mr E. Price and Mr and Mrs Jlinaldi. During the evening a euchre tournament was held, the winners being Ladies: Mrs W. Logan 1, Mrs J. Drabble 2; gentlemen: Mr J. Burnip 1, Mr "W. Livingstone 2. KAIKOURA. Hannier and Kaikoura, juniors met at Kaikoura on Saturday, Hanmer winrang by 4 points to 3. Hanmer weva superior in the backs and Kaikoura in the forwards. The Cheviot ladies' hockey team defeated Hapuku by two goals to x one, after an interesting display. > CHEVIOT. A Very 'laxgp and representative gathering of residents of Parnassus and Spatswood met in the Spotswood Ha,H J on Thursday evening to honour Mr and [ Mrs F. Barnes and family. Mr Barnes has been a member of tho railway staff at Parnassus for a number of years, and during that period has by his unfailing courtesy and willingness to'do his best for everybody gained the. goodwill and esteem of all. Tho early part of the evening was devoted to cards and dancing, music being supplied by Mr W. Ross Smith, extras being contributed by Mrs Stevenson, Miss I. Wilkinson and B. Harneiss. During the evening Mr O. L. Ruthorford, on behalf of the residents presented Mr Barnes with a gold watch and chain and a roll of bank notes, and Mrs Barnes with a gold wristlet watch, their young daughter receiving a brooch. In "making the presentation Mr' Rutherford spoke in the highest terms of tho good qualities of the departing guests, and tho large attendance that evening bore eloquent testimony to the high esteem in which they were held. Mr W. Lawrence, on behalf of the railway staff of the Wai-para-Parnassus line, presented Mr Barnes with a secretaire as a token ofthe esteem and goodwill of his fe-llow-workers. Mr E. C. Webb, on behalf of tho Parnassus Tennis Club, Schomt and Library Committee an: 1 - rlr H. N Buttle, on behalf of tho residents of Spotswood, also spoke and endorsed tho remarks of tho other speakers. Mr Bames, who was received with ,contiiir ued applause, suitably responded, and expressed his regret at severing his connexion with a district in which he bad spent such a pleasant time. During the week Mr Barnes was also the recipient of a travelling rug from the Masonic fraternity of Cheviot.
PARNASSUS. A social evening was held in the Spotswood Hall on Thursday, when the friends o£ Mr and Mrs F. G. Barnes met to bid them farewell. Mr Barnes has been porter at tho Parnassus station for the last eight years. During that time he lias -won and held tho esteem of all. When the time came for his departure to Christehurch, residents of tho district showed their appreciation of him and his wife by giving Mrs Barnes a gold wristlot watch, Mr Barnes a gold watch and chain suitably inscribed, also a wallet of notes, and Miss Joan Barnes a gold brooch. Mr G. L. Eutherford, in making the presentation, referred to both the guests' good qualities, and wished them every prosperity. Mr B. C. Webb spoke on behalf of tho Tennis Club and.,-- local Library, both of which Mr Barnes has given valuable service to; in organising social functions his place will bo hard to fill. Mr Buttle spoke pn behalf of Spotswood residents, and Mr Lawrence for his fellow employees on the railway. Mr Barnes suitably repliod, and a ploasant evening was brought to a close with tho singing of "Auld Lang Syne." Music for the dance was supplied by Mr Ross-Smith, extras being played by Mrs Stevenson and Miss I. Wilkinson.
FERNSIDE. Last week, a social was held in aid.,, of the school funds. Dancing was enjoyed by the young people in one room, while there was a euchre tournament in the ante-room for those who did not wish to dance. The winners of the cards were Miss J. Kennedy and Mr George Lill. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs S. G. Hewitt and Mi' C Vickery. Music was - supplied by Miss M. Sutherland and Mr D. Duske. Mr S. Inns also accompanied the piano with his violin for a number of dances. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss M. Plaskett and Mr C. Minchington, Mr W. Plaskett was M.C. A privet hedge is to be planted along tho school road fences, to replace the niacrocarpa hedge, which wasi destroyed by fire in March of last year. Last week, the Oust School football and basketball teams paid a visit to Fernside School for practice matches. The object of the. football match was to pick one really good team to play in the competitions. Each school, alone, has not a strong enough team, therefore the two schools are combining. A good game was played, the visitors beating the home team by 9 points to nil. In the basketball, the Cust girls beat Fernside by 78 to 8. After the games were over, players i and visitors were entertained at tea. by the ladies present TW referees were • basketball. Mis*. J. M. Milne, and. football, Mr D. Milne. 1 SOUTHBROOK. The scholars of the public school made a presentation of a set of fish cutlery to Mr S. Sullivan, who has been headmaster for tho past two years. Ngare Sullivan was also the recipient of a Doulton cup and saucer and a hand mirror. Mr SulJivan thanked the scholars for the gifts, and spoke of the happy time he had had amongst them. A. farewell social of a dual nature was held in tho Coronation Hall on Thursday evening, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs S. Sullivan, and Mr and Mrs J. Vette. 3lr A. Mcintosh acted aschairman in the absence of Mr N. Archer. Mr Sullivan who has been headmaster of the public school for over two years, had 'won the respect and esteem of the district. He had interested himself in the advancement of ' sport, and in this respect was moat popular. Mrs Sullivan also was an active hockey player. There was general regret at their leaving. Mr and Mrs J. Vette had been in the district many years, and Mr Vette had been a member of the School Committee for several terms. The chairman wished both families every happiness in their new districts. Mr and Mrs Sullivan were presented with a set of crystal glassware on tray, and ilr and Mrs Vette with a travelling rug and afternoon tea service. Progressive euchre was played for the first part of the evening, the winners being Miss Meyer !and Messrs J. Maynard and Chapman. After supper, dancing was indulged in till a late hour.

AKAROA. ] As the outcome of a recent visit to Akaroa of Mr Pawson, the Commercial Agent for the Railway Department, and his subsequent interview with the Canterbury Progress League's organiser, the local Borough Council has invited both gentlemen to attend a meeting of citizens to be held early in July, at which proposals will bo discussed for advertising more extensively the- attractions of Akaroa as a health and a tourist resort. The ladies' committee, with Ethel Le Lievre as secretary, which has been made responsible for the successful running of the Returned Soldiers' Ball, has decided to hold the function this week in the Oddfellows' Hall. At tho last meeting of the Akaroa Golf Club's executive, Dr. A. P. Cowan, club captain in the chair, it was decided to hold a. nine-hole match between teams representing the north and south ends of Akaroa. Mrs W. Newton, Mr F. C. Newton, and the captain were appointed a sub-commit-tee to carry it. out. Messrs F. G. Armstrong, "W. E. Jacobson. and P. E. Davis were appointed a green committee. Mr Frank Le Lievre, of Paua Bay, was elected as a country member.
KOWAI BUSH, Mild nor'-west winds and sunny days havo been tho rule this so that the ground has thawed and allowed tho farm work to continue apace. The school roll number, which has been causing the residents some anxiety during the last few years, is now in a very satisfactory condition, there being sixteen pupils on the roll, with every chance of the number being well maintained in the future. At the fortnightly euchre tournament, the prize-winners were Miss Belcher and Mr J. Rae.
