ALLEGED THEFT. (bmsciai. to "thx peess.") GEEYMOUTH, June 26. On the application of Senior-Sergeant P. J. McCarthy, Alexander Eea, alias Alexander Hamilton, who was arrested yesterday at Waiuta on a charge of breaking and entering and theft at Auckland of a roll of worsted, valued at £47, the property of Alfred EfnesC Gifford, was remanded to appear at Auckland on Friday. The SeniorSergeant stated that several other men had already been dealt -with in connexion with the samo charge. Mr A. Naylor, J.P., was on the Bench.

United Pavilion. The Greymouth Borough Council decided in committee to arrange a conference in connexion with the Eugby Leagues request for tho use of the United Pavilion between tho League and tho United Club, to be attended by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Parfitt) and the Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade). The Cenotaph. Further improvements are being effected at the Cenotaph by the planting of ornamental hedges. Personal. Mr Jonah Vergurson, a pioneer resident of Greymouth, died this morning after a short illness at the age of 73 years. The deceased was an expert horticulturist and a member of the Druids' Lodge. He was for many years employed as a doorkeeper at the Opera House and gatekeeper at Victoria Park, and was a keen supporter of the West Coast Eugby Union. A widow and two daughters are left to mourn their loss. The Druidic service will be read at tho fuueral, which is to take place on Sunday. , . , Mr N. Scott, of Humphries, underwent an operation at the Westland Hospital yesterday. Miss Agnes. Holland, daughter of Mr H E. Holland, M.P., returns to Westport to-morrow after spending a holiday in Australia. The marriage will take place at the Presbyterian Church, Greymouth, on Tuesday, of Miss May Croy, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Croy, of. Westport, to Mr Douglas McKnight, second son of Mr and Mrs J. McKnight, of Greymouth. Swimming Baths Committee. Dr. McKay presided to-night at a meeting of the Swimming Baths Committee. After discussion it was decided to abandon the proposal to hold _ a crowning ceremony in connexion with the Queen Carnival, and a resolution was carried in favour of a grand picture ball at which the Queen of the Carnival will be presented with a golden .key.
