PERSONAL. Members of the Ashburton Police Force gathered on Thursday night and presented Senior-Sergeant D. Jackson, who is about to retire on superannuation, with a travelling rug as a token of the esteem in which he was held. Constable O'Grady, who made the presentation, also handed the retiring officer a Doulton teapot and jug for Mrs Jackson. General News. Owing to the Eacing Club's meeting being held yesterday, there was no sitting of the" Magistrate's Court. Tlte fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge, M.U.. 1.0.0. F., was hel.l on Thursday, the X.G., Bro. I>. Milne, presiding. Two candidates were proposed for membership, aud three wore initiated into the Order. Twelve members were reported on the sick funds. The following members-were appointed to fill the minor chairs for the ensuing term:— U.S. to N.G., Bro. G. Bushell; L.S. to N.G., Bro. E. Ede; U.S. to Y.G., Bro. A. Jones; L.S. to V.G., Bro. J. Phelps; Guardian, Bro. K. Thompson; pianist, Bro. J. Childs. Fancy Dress Ball. Under the auspices of the St. Stephen's Girls' Club, a children's 'fancy dress ball was held on Thursday night, when the attendance was in the vicinity of .".00. The hall was most effectively decorated, and reflected credit upon those responsible. The children were all in fancy" dress, the variety of the "latter being hardly conceivable, ■while many were unique. The evening, which was taken up with various competitions and dancing, left enjoyment reflected on each child's face. The prizes for the best dresses (girl and boy) went to Helen Junes (Wedding Cake) and Derry Carson (Policeman). The prize for the most original girl's dress was worn by Olive Clark (Shop Window), while Amundsen was characterised by Bruce Smallbone, the most originally dressed boy. The youngest girl at the function was Diana Collins, who was dressed as Little Bed Eiding Hood, and, the youngest boy was Billie Lockard, who represented an Indian. Individual dances were given by Mercy Cooper, Edie Jary (Irish Jig), Enid Bishop (sailors' hornpipe), May New, Lila New. Myrtle Dwyer, and Eita Dwyer (skip-ping-rope), while a novelty item on a small bicycle was given by Neal Hopkins. The music for the dancing was supplied in turn by Nellie Osman, Audrey Euddock, Enid Thompson, Eunice Flatman, Don Smith, Gilbert and Hugh Arlington. The judges were Mesdames G. J. S. Fisher, E. B. Newton, J. Euddock, and C. G. Boyce. Mail Notices.

METHVEN. The ladies' hockey club will be represented by the following.against Rakaia at Mcthiven to-day:—Misses S. Newman, M. Duff, I. Dalton, Ivy McLennan, A. Jessep, H. Ireland, L. Davidson, J. Burrows, D. Williams, At. Crooks, and. M. Dalton; emergencies, M. Cranfiehl and C. Street. The Methven Branch of the Royal (IS Z.) Society for the Health of Women and Children held a very successful "Paddv's market" in the Anglican Hall ?n Trinrsdav afternoon and evening. For some time past tta* ladies of the committee have been busy canvassing the district for gifts of produce, etc., and that their efforts were successfu was shown by the large and varied assortment of goods which they had to dispose of. Throughout the clay the stallholders worked hard to quit their stocks and good business resulted. Those in charge of the various stalls were:--Sweets.: Mrs R. N. Elliott, Misses Richards and McKay; cakes, Mesdames Reid,Dalton, Baxter and Miss Jessep; produce: Mesdames Lloyd, C T. Jessen and E. A. Bland; sewing, Mesdames G. Nicholls, K. Aitken and Shearer; bran tub, Mrs F. A. Tooley; afternoon tea, Mesdames Jno. Watson, D. Chambers, H. Green, T. Fairbairn, J. A. Callaghan, and J. McAnulty. In the evening n ivery enjoyable concert was presented as follows: Pianoforte solo, Miss Dulcie Pawson; song, Mrs Shearer; song, Mr A. L. Mangin; song, Mrs Tooley; recitation, Miss J>. Pawson; song, Mrs J. F. Stone; song, Mrs Temple; ventriloquial item, Mr Buchan; song, Mr J. Temple; recitation, Mrs R. N. Elliott; song, Miss A. Duff; Irish Jig, Misses Crooks, Waddington and Petno; song, Mrs A. E. Henderson; character sketch, Mr W. Buchan; soug, Miss Duff. During an interval Dr. W. H. D. MoKee thanked all those who had given so liberally and also Chose who had come along to purchase the goods given. The ladies of the committee had worked hard and gone to a lot of trouble, and they well deserved the support that had ben accorded them. After supper had been enjoyed the balance of the produce was disposed of by auction and a good clearance made. Mr F. B. Lloyd was auctioneer, assisted by Missee Thomson, Owen and Temple. The various competitions were won as follows: —Guessing weight of ham, Mrs F. H. Chambers; guessing weight of lamb, Messrs W. K. Wilson and J. ft. Dalton; three-tier cake, Mrs Geo. Callaghan; cushion, Mrs H. E. Thompson; cushion No. 2, Mrs Hector Rpid; beans in bottle, Mrs Jno. Watson; bo's chocolates, Miss Natalie Campbell. Mr W. A. Haden, treasurer to the branch, reports that over £7O will be added to . the funds. RAKAIA. A football match between teams from the Rakaia Public and Convent Schools was played on the Domain on Thursday afternoon and resulted in a win for the Public School by 31 points to nil. Mr Cooke was referee.
