SCHOOL IDEALS.
■;to the editoe. of "the peess." Sir,—The remarks made by Mr Grcisse at the opening of the Old Collegians' Sports Club were- well worth noting. After remarking that. Winchester School was the oldest public school in Fi'igland, and the one on which ' most English public schools had been modelled, the headmaster pointed out that Chi i.stV College was tho oldest in New Zealand, "and hoped that it" would spread it* ideals far and wide—but it lvsd a problem not attempted by the English public schools, viz., "to interpret its ideals in the. terms" of democracy!." . Mr Crosse laid stress on the truism .'that "sport'' was to teach ''youth" to-' <c play the'game," win or lose—this applies equally, to all classes, and if I may venture to add, the motto of Winchester School (which he apparently overlooked), i.e., that "manners makyth man" is equally applicable, and that these two indications,, followed by English - -public schools, will enable Christ's College to solve thp problem enunciated by , its headmaster, i.e., "the interpretation.of its ideals in the terms of democracy"— in other words, to'show'that its ideals »>.•<: nof incompatible*with, universal acceptancel in ;the ."rough ant} tumble" of everyday life.—Yours;, etc.*.-: -'. j ; .
