FREIGHTER'S HIGH WAGES.
(BT CAULK— MESS ASSOCIATION—COPI-RIODT.) (AITSTUALIAN AND K.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received June 23th, 5.3 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 24. The ship's articles for the freighter Oneida, which was purchased in June, show wages much higher than those paid on other freighters. The minimum wage on the Oneida is 100 dollars monthly, which is paid to messmen, cookf, and ordinary seamen, while able seamen and firemen got 105 dollars, oi!;ors. HO dollars, first engineer 225 dollars, .second 175, third 150, boatswain 'J 23, ar.d wireless operator LlO.
Tho action has caused a very great controversy, some shippers maintaining that it will encourage youths to turn seamen, and others declaring that it is impossible to pay such wages and remain in business. It is estimated that 100 dollars a month aboard ship are equivalent to ISO ashore.
