THE MEMORIAL COLUMN.

CATHEDRAL SQUARE SITE

The May;>r. Mr J. K. Archer, yesterday received a request from the War Memorial (Column'i Committee, asking him to try to secure the permission of the City Council to erect tho "War Memorial on- tho Cathedral square site, formerly occupied by the Godley statue at the rear of the tramway shelter. Mr Archer said that the request would be placed before the City Council at its next meeting. It will bo recalled that at a meeting of the City Council, held on April 30th, IHi'-J, a special coinir.ittee, to which the question of the site for the Memorial Column was referred, reported that it had considered three sites—Victoria square, west end of Cashcl street, and the triangle opposite the Bank of New Zealand: the committee recommended the Cashcl street site as the most suitable, but at the same time it did not raise any objection to the Victoria square site if that was preferred n . v the Column Commit tee. Interviewed on May Sth last year, Mr Genree Gould." chairman of the War Memorial Column Committee, said that it bad been decided to await the election of another committee before proceeding with the construction of the Column, and to apply again for the Godley Statue site. In a later interview Mr Gould said that no doubt the chief objection to the Cathedral square site was the. existence of the tramway shelter, but the Column Committee was agreeable to erect the memorial behind the shelter. As motor-bus traffic dcveloned, it was considered possible that the shelter, which in present circumstances served a useful purpose, might not. at some future date, bo required. As to tho other sites suggested bv the City Council that recently went out of office, ho preferred not to express an opinion, as the committee had set out to secure the Cathedral square site, and lie hoped that the application for this site would be carefully considered on its merits by the new Council.
