PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO "thi PEISS.") GREYMOUTH, June .25. Mr F. E. Coote, late manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Greymouth, leaves- to-morrow for Wellington, via Nelson. Messrs R. S. Kent, H. Chapman, A. J. McCredie, and A. W. Wellstead left for Christchureh by to-day's express. Mrs T. E. Y. Seddon returned from Christchureh this afternoon. Mr "W. Goss, of Christchureh, arrived in Greymouth this afternoon.
Mrs H. Haskell, of Poerun, has been discharged from the Grey River Hospi tal, and left for her home this morning. Miss Eileen Werner, 'second daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Werner, of Du;iollie, was married at the Church of England, Rimu, to Mr Bert Ellery, youngest son of Mrs Ellery, Black's Point, Reefton. The Rev. J. Perkins officiated. Mrs W. McCormaek was matron of honour, and Mr J. Peake best man. Ththappy couple left later for Otira, en route for the north on their honeymoon. The death has occurred at the Grey River Hospital of Mrs Annie Hill, of Brunner, aged 68 years. Deceased had resided at Brunner for 45 years. She is survived by her husband, six daughters, and one son.
Mr F. Roche has been appointed the delegate of the Westpoit Jockey Club to the Country Clubs' Conference. At a public' meeting held at Stockton, the following were appointed a Domain Board:—Messrs P. Adds (chairman), J. Mcßean (secretary and treasurer), Geddes, Gleeson, Berry and McMillan.
Mr and Mrs S. Paul, Westport, were entertained by their friends on the 23rd anniversary of their marriage. Mi* H. P. Lawry presided, and Mr Manhire presented the guests with a Doulton jus and salad bowl Miss Eileen McKnight, who is leaving Granity to enter the nursing profession, was tendered a social at St. Peter's vicarage and presented with a leather suitcase. Ship for Hokitika. The Orewa, a small vessel recently purchased by Mr G. H. Wood for the trade between Hokitika and southern ports, arrived at Greymouth this morning after a protracted voyage from Auckland. She will resume the passage to Hokitika to-morrow, if conditions are favourable. Grey Hospital' Board. The monthly meeting of the Grey Hospital Board waß held to-day. Present —Messrs J. P. Irvine (in the chair), E. Ashton, J. Brislane, W. H. Parfitt, J. Lamberton, and J. Greaney. Consent to the loan of £25,000 was received from the Minister of Health. A reciprocal agreement with the Waitaki Board was approved. Correspondence was received from the Health Department and the Public Trust Office regarding the Board's loan. The latter advised that the first instalment of £ 5000 would be made available on August Ist, and the balanco in quarterly instalments. The chairman reported that Dr. Moore, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, was. recovering from his recent illness, and the secretary was instructed to write conveying the Board's gratification at his recovery. The resignation of Sisters Johnston and Turner and Nurse Passau -were received. Inangaaua County Council. At the monthly meeting of the Inangahua -"County Council it was decided to open a list at the Council Chambers for subscriptions to the national memorial to the late Prime Minister. The tenders of A. D. Marsden at £lO5. for Byrne's Creek road, and C. Herlihy and party, at £ll 15s for Hukuwai road were accepted. United Debating Society. Mr A. Adams presided at the annual meeting of the United Debating Society. The annual report expressed regret that more young members were not coming forward to maintain the strength of the club. The election of officers resulted aa follows -—Patron, Mr H. H. Allison; president, Mr A. Adams; vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. McGrath, J. B. Kent, and I. Baker; committee, Messrs K. Trouland, J. Booth, H. B. Chalk, and J. H. Price; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. E. Weaver; auditor, Mr I. Baker; competition team selectors, Messrs A. Adams and I. Lord; delegates to Competitions Society, Messrs I. Lord, J. U. Kent, and A. Adams. Six new members were proposed. Mining Matters. Work will be resumed at the Stata mine to-morrow, making a total of tares days for each, of the past two weeks. Greymouth Borough Council. The Greymouth Borough Council met to-night. Present the Mayor (Mr W. H. Parfitt) and Crs. J. W. Greenslade, J. McGinley, J. B. Kent, G. R. Harker, H. E. Doogan, ,R. Williams, G. Perotti and F. A. Kitchingham. The Mayor reported having interviewed the District Engineer and other railway officers, who had been on the Coast, with reference to several matters of local importance. He discussed with them the unsightly appearance of the railway line along the Mawhera quay frontage, the proposed loading bank at Karoro, and the section of land at present held by Mr Sampson alongside the railway line in Petrie avenue, the lease of which he was willing to sell to the borough. The matters had received sympathetic consideration from the Departmental officers. A letter was received from Mr J. Lamberton, complaining of the dangerous state of the road and corner leading from Alexander street into Railway terrace. The matter was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. The Railway Department notified that its offer of £25 for road diversion purposes was considered adequate. The Mayor reported- that the Railwav Engineer had promised to do all he could in the matter. A letter was read from the West Coast Rugby Leaguo requesting the Council to authorise lower grade play-
ers to use the United pavilion as a change room. The letter stated that the United Club had refused a former application, and as the Borough wa3 financially interested in the maintenance of the pavilion, it was hoped that it would exercise any powers it had in the matter. The request was dealt with in committee.
Cr. Doogan moved that all matters relating to the supply and distribution of eleetricitv within the Borough of Greymouth be carried out by the Grey Power Board.
Cr. Ivitehingham, in seconding the motion, said the Council would be faced with the problem of raising another £SOOO per annum if the revenue from the gasworks fell away to an appreciable extent.
Cr. Greenslade moved as an amendment that further and mature consideration be given to the matter, and that the Power Board be approached and asked what concessions it is prepared to give, and expert advire be obtained for the guidance of the Council before a final decision is made. He said they did not know that the Power Board was willing that the Council should take over the distribution of electricity in the town. In Lvttelton the Council had taken over distribution and had benefited the ratepayers. Cr. Harker .seconded the amendment.
The motion was carried by sis votes to three. Mr A. J. Sloss. traffic inspector, was reappointed for a further term of six months. The Grey Power Board was given permission to erect poles in King's Domain. It was resolved to request the gas works manager to prepare a report'as to t v e 'advisability of the borough purchasing electric current in bulk from the Power Board and retailing it. Motor-Cycle Club. At a meeting of the Greymouth Motor-cycle Club it was resolved to protest against the increase in the registration fee for competitors, from 2s Gel to 10s. The secretary was instructed to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs asking for permission to run an art union. Sunday Football. The Inangahua Rugby Sub-Union pressed for a match" against the Buller representative team on its return from Greymouth, but the Buller Union is against Sunday football, and the request was refused, inangahua sent a further appeal, and the matter.was referred to" the team manager, who decided not to allow-the match to take place. Roading Material. The concession on the carriage of road metal is modified, but it is proposed that tar, etc., for local bodies should still carry a concession, and a reduction is made in the rate of bitumen for roading purposes. Coal Freights. In connexion with the charges on native coals, the special. rate for distances over 75 miles has been abolished. The present rates, it is stated, are not even sufficient to meet the actual working costs involved in the carriage of the coal, and New Zealand coal constitutes over 27 per cent, of the total tonnage of goods handled.
