Social and Personal. Miss Barth (Dunedin) and Miss Heineman (Wellington) are staying at The Bungalow. Mrs R. A. Riekman and Miss Moira Riekman left yesterday on a short visit to Ashburton. Mrs R, L. Orbcll (Park Lane) returned from Christchurch yesterday. Mrs A. J. Clowes and the Misses Clowes (Wai-iti road) left yesterday for their future home in Christchurch. Mrs W. T. Ritchie (College road) returned yesterday from a visit to Christchurch. Miss Sadie Scales (Merivale) is the guest of Mrs Gordon Wood (Wai-iti road). Mrs Howley (Sefton street) returned yesterday from a visit to the North Island. Mr and Mrs J. A. D-aw-son (Coventry, England) returned from the Hermitage on Wednesday. Miss E. Matheson (Wai-iti road) has returned from a visit to her sister, Mrs C. Cresswell (I.isniore).. Miss Hart (Trafalgar street) left yesterday for the north to join the Rotoiua for .England. Dr.. and Mrs D. G. Matheson have returned to Kurow after a visit to Mrs Matheson (Wai-iti road). Mrs Chilton Hayter went to Wellington yesterdav on her way back to D'Urville Island. District Highways Council. At yesterday's meeting of the District Highways Council, No. 15, Mr J. D. Bruce, South Island representative on the Main Highways Board, gave an address dealing with the work being done by the Board. Mr C. J. Talbot referred to the effect of tar-sealed roads on horse traffic. The whole matter needed going into for the country ratepayers wcre_ already bearing a heavy burden in the maintenance of roads.' Mr T. B. Garrick referred to the question of. converging traffic, pointing out that the Levels County had to carry all the traffic and was not receiving any assistance from the Waitaki or Mackenzie Counties. Mr Bruce said the Board had gone into the question of amendments to the Act, and were making quite a number of recommendations to the Minister. They were confidential at present, but he could assure members that they were doing their best to improve conditions. In adopting its roading policy, the Board had taken into consideration the amount of traffic, and the classification of the road depended, on the amount of traffic. In conclusion, Mr Bruce made brief reference to the purchase of road-making plant for counties, stating that they had recognised the position some counties were in and had decided to' purchase plant which could be paid for in four to five years. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Briice for his address.

TEMUKA. Whilst . motoring on the Pleasant Point road -on-Wednesday Messrs M. Batchelor (Christchurch), W. M. C'otterell and E. B. Cooper (Temuka) came upon, an elderly rnan lying.unconscious, face downwards in the road in. a pool of blood. He' was immediately comteyed to Pleatsaiiit Point, where ho was attended by I>r. Milne. Later on it w-s ascertained that his 'name was J. Heattie,- and thiit he resided with his daughter, Mrs F. Xtoiinith.orne; Temuka. An inquest concerning the death .of Mrs Martin Greolisli, who died suddenly on : Tiiosday night, was held at the Courthouse on Wednesday afternoon, before the District Coroner, Mr E. D. Mosley. Mr C. H. Hooper stated that deceased was his daughter, and she was 24 years of age. He stated she was subject to fits, .which first developed • when she was seven year si of age. Dr. F. A. Scanmell stated that about 10.45 on Tuesday be. was called to the residence of Mrs Hooper, - and the deceased was lying dead. Acting under-instructions from the Coroner, he held a post-mortem examination. From previous knowledge of deceased, witness knew that she was subject to epileptic fit's. In his opinion death was diie to 'heart failure, the result of chronic disease of the kidneys, accelerated as a result of an epileptic fit. The Coroner brought in a verdict in accordance with' the medical evidence. WOODBURY. The Woodbury Ladies' Rifle Club has accepted , a challenge from the Orari Bridge Ladies' Club, and the match will b* fired at Woodbury next month. The Men's Rifle Club fired a match with the Four Peak's Club on Wednesday night, and were defeated by 13 points, the scores being 310 to 323.
