ASHBURTON. GENERAL NEWS. Mr E. D. Moslcy, S.M., will not visit Ashburton to-day on account of the races. As there are only a few undefended civil cases set down for hearing, these will be dealt with by J.P.'s. The various phases of banking were dealt with at Tinwnld on Wednesdayevening when an address was given to a small attendance by Mr J. X. Harle, the official Labour candidate for Ashburton. To supplement their funds, the Allenton Sports Club and School Committee are running a series of euchre tournaments in the school. The attendance at Wednesday night's function totalled about 200. The prizes were wen byMiss D. Norrish and Mr J. Harold. The receipts at the door amounted to £l7. The euchre tournaments under the auspices of the Hampstead War Memorial Society to liquidate the debt on the baths, gates, and hall, were completed on Wednesday evening, when the grand aggregate prize of £lO 10s went to Mr 0. Stills. The prizes for the evening were won by Mrs Turner and Mr C. Challis. In the primary schools senior Rugby football competitions, East Ashburton defeated the Allenton school by 4 points to 3 yesterday afternoon. Previous to this match both teams had an equal number of points, but the former is now in the lead. The Ashburton Ladies' Golf Club completed its third monthly medal match yesterday. There was a largo attendance. Mrs J. Smith proved the winner with 104—25—7.0, while Mrs G. J. S. Fisher was runner-up with 104—24—50. Two candidates were initiated into the Order at the fortnightly meeting of Hakatere Lodge No. 68, 1.0.0. F., on Wednesday evening, and one proposal was handed in. The sum of £2 2s was voted to a Sister of the Lily of Franklin Rebekah Lodge. Daphne Rebekah Lodge No. 34 wrote inviting the Brothers of Hakatere Lodge to be present at a social which would follow the installation of new officers next Lodge night. METHVEN. Messrs C. T. and H. E. Jessep, of Methven, are on a holiday visit to the North Island. They intend visiting their brother at "\Vairoa. At present they are in Rotorua. Mr C. A. Wuoiiey, Miss Woolley, and Mr T. Origiingion were the guests of honour at a socral evening heid at, the residence of Mr F. iiorsnelci, at Highbank, on Wednesday evening, where a large number of residents of iiighbank and Metnven took the opportunity to say goodbye to them on the eve of ihejr departure from Highbank. The evening was spent in friendly euchre matches, interspersed with musical and elocutionary items. During the evening the Jlev. F. A. Tooley expressed the regret of all present at the departure of Miss and Mr Woolley and Mr T. Criglington from and paid a tribute to the faithful service of them all to the church, especially Mr Woolley, who had been a member of the vestry over a considerable period and whose services in this connexion would be a distinct loss to the Methven parochial district. Mr Tooley then called upon Mr J. Adams, who presented the guests of the evening with small tokens of tEe esteem in which, they are held by the parishioners in the district. Mr Woo'ley, on behalf of his sister, nephew, and himself, thanked the speakers for their kind references to them, and for the small tokens of esteem, which w : ould always remind them of the warm-heartedness of the Bujhbank and Methven people. Musical items were contributed-by the Rev. F. A. Tooley, Mr F. Horsfield, Mrs J. Adams, Mrs F. Horsfield, Mr T. Grant, and Mr W. A. Haden. Amonor those present were Mesdames Haden, A. Ireland, T. Cleave, Wells, Grant, Misses Gilpin. Smith. Merrie, Ireland, Woolley, Messrs Smith, Cieeve, Grant. Adams, Criglington, and Haden.
MEDBURY. A largo and representative mooting of resident* was held recently in the Medbury schoolroom to bid farewell to Miss E. R. Rivers. The evening was very pleasantly spent in dancing, ex-, cellent pianoforte music being supplied by Mrs S. Cinders, I and violin music by Mr J. extras being played by the | Misses Dalz-eil and Miss E. R. Rivers. During an interval. Mr J. Bunting, who presided, on behalf of the residents, asked Miss Rivers to accept gifts from the Medbury people, and on behalf of the echool committee, presented her with a cheque. He referred to Miss Rivers's excellent record as a teacher and the good results she had achieved at the Medbury School. In conclusion, lie wished her every happiness and success in her future life. Mr TV. J. Leach suitably responded for Miss Rivers, and they were then accorded musical honours. A bountiful supper was provided by the ladies. RAKAIA. The ouarterly meeting of Court Star of Rakaia, A.0.F.. was held on Wednesday, Bro. R. Kerslake, C.R., presiding. It was decided to thank the ladies and all helpers in connexion with the recent fancy dress ball. At ?. meeting: of the committee of the Rakaia Football Club, Mr C. F son presided. The transfer of a senior player was held over. A request -was received from ?.Ir H. ITopwood asking the club to sign' a protost against the increased county taxation of motor vehicles. It was decided to sign the protest. It was decided to write to the Ashburton Sub-Union regarding the lack of information from the secretary concerning fixtures and other business. The secretary reported that R. Tatterson, of the senior team, had been selected for the county representative team, and T. • Pickering as one of the reserves. The secretary reported that a friendly match had been arranged between Duusandel and Rakaia. teams to be played at Dunsandel, and a return match between Doric and Rakaia, to be played a.t Rakaia. The Rakaia,.Football Club's card party was held in.the Library on Wednesday. Mrs 'Tatterson and Mi- W. Shannon; won the prizes. The consolation prizes went to Miss M. Tatterson and Mr G. Henderson. A hockey inafch between teams from the Rakaia Public and Convent Schools was ulavecl on ihe Domain- yesterday afterno"u, and resulted in a win for the Publio School by one goal to nil. Miss K. Stewart was referee.
PENDARVES. An accident which narrowly escaped having very sorious consequences, befel Mr Archie Campbell, driver of a motor lorry. He was assisting to' load poles on Mr Peter Doig's Tann for the electric; lighting system when a pole rolled back. struck him on the head and shoulder, and him down. It then bounced on to his \iu\T: He was rendered unconscious and _was taken to the Ashburton County Hospital' by Mr Doig.
