The most sensational incident at the Wimbledon tennis tournament to-day occurred when it was Jean Borotra's turn to have a narrow escape. O. G. Turubull countered Borotra's whirlwind smashing by terriffic driving. One hit felled the Frenchman as he came into the net. Borotru rose and tried to walk to the base-line, but was obviously in pain. He moved towards the umpire's chair and lay full length on grass. It looked as if ho would be forced to retire, but a. few moments later he pluckily resumed. After a thrilling and prolonged struggle he beat Turnbull, 10-8, 7-5, 10-8. J. O. Anderson beat Burr, 6-0, 6-2, 64. In the second round Crole-Rees beat Kingsley, the British Davis Cup representative, S-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. Lawrence Itice (America) beat Sumner (Australia), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. In tho ladies' singles, first round, Mrs Bridge defeated Mrs Melody (New Zealand), 6-3, 6-0. Mrs Melddy won the first two games, and then Mrs Bridge developed a strong game, scoring many aces. She also scored from overhead smashes. In the second 1 round, Lycett, Irish Davis Cup plaver, beat C. Scoorpe, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1; Barclay beat Temple, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. In the women's singles, first round, Miss McKane beat Miss Sterry. In the second round Miss Boyd beat Miss Hardie, Miss Akhurst beat Mrs Weston. Spence (South Africa) defeated Wheatley, 6-2, 6-2, 8-6. Miss Ryan beat Miss Brown and Madame Billout beat Mrs Lycett.
