ARCHBISHOP JULIUS.
DR. SADLIER'S TRIBUTE
(special to "the phess.'')
NELSON, June 2-1
''Since last we met the Church of tho Province of New Zealand has been called to bear tho loss of its beloved Primate," said the Bishop of Nelson in his Presidential address to Synod. "Perhaps few knew Archbishop Julius as I did. My knowledge of him goes back to tho days when'he was Archdeacon of Ballarat under Bishop Samuel Thornton, and I was a Bible Class boy beginning to find out that Sundayschool teaching was a> subject needing skill and brains as well .as piety and self-sacrifice'. I can recall his wise and manly counsel in those days, and when I came to Now Zealand, as he had done 2*2 yeirs before, I found in him, the same quaint candour, brilliant common senso and intense conviction ns in my boyhood days. I found, too, that as the years had passed his early toleration had sweetened into an ever-broadening charity. His'great spiritual power, his •eloqueu.ee, his sincere faith in tho Redeemer as the only means of our salvation, his uncompromising messngo gracefully and convincingly expressed, will bo a treasured memory of the Church of this province. I cVo much, to his encouragement and to his frank but kindly criticism. He takes into his retirement the good wishes of tho community and the thankful prayers of tho members of the Church."
