HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The twenty-second annual meeting of the Canterbury Horticultural Society was held last night, Mr A. R. Bagg presiding. Before the business of the meeting was commenced, the chairman commented upon the poor attendance. He said that the Society, like a number of other societies and bodies, was run by a few. Even though there was a good number of persons euroHed as members of the Society, there was only a small number who assisted the Society's work in a practical way. The annual report stated that, taken all round, the past year's operations had been satisfactory. Daffodil, rose, gladiolus, and dahlia, and chrysanthemum shows had been held, and, with the exception of the gladioluß and dahlia show, they had all been up to standard and well patronised by the public. A feature of the four shows was the display (for exhibition only) of Messrs Nairn and Sons, Lincoln road, who had for years supported the Society. The committee had decided to award them the Royal Horticultural Society's Silver-Gilt Medal, which was the highest award available. During the year 130 members had been enrolled. Thanks were due to the donors of cups, special prizes, and donations, to the judges, and to all those who had from time to time contributed to the Society. The report showed a credit balance of £92. In moving tho adoption of the report and . balance-sheet, the' chairman said that although the membership of the Society stood at about 600, he hoped it would reach the 1000 mark. Christchurch was the garden city of the Dominion, and he saw no reason why the roll should not increase considerably. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson; president, the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; vice-presidents. Lady Rhodes, Mesdames W. T.
