The slippery state of the floors at the Christehurch Hospital was remarked upon at yesterday's meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, and on the motion of the acting-chairman, Mr W. J. Spencer, it -was decided to socuro estimates for covering tho floors of the corridors with rubber. Mr Spcncor stated that quite a number of people had slipped in the corridors and there was a likelihood of someone being seriously injured.

Tendors are boing called by Messr3 Ellis and Hall till 4 p.m. on Monday, July 6th, for tho erection of a twostorey wooden house iu Brown's road, St. Albans.

Messrs Ellis and Hall have just accepted a tondor for additions and alterations to St. Anne's Home, Papanui road, for tho St. Anne's Guild. Mr E. 0. Gravcston is tho buildor.

A story appeared in a London newspaper to the effect that No. 10 Downing street, tho official residence of tho Prime Minister, and No. 11, next door, the residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, were in such a state of decay that the Office of Works was considering whether it would be desirable to rebuild both house's instead of making further repairs. Wo understand that thero is no foundation for tho statement, says the "Daily Telegraph." Tho outside brickwork of these historic houses "was re-pbinted, some time ago, and certain renovations are usually carried out in the spring of the year. But their general condition does not in the least warrant such a report as that referred to, and no proposals for rebuilding have been considered. An official of the Office of Woks declared that the buildings are in such a condition that they are "fit to stand for another hundred years."

In converting its -works near Hobarfc to a manufactory of printing paper an Australian Corporation has undertaken to replant with trees tho forest areas it will necessarily devastate in securing material for wood pulp. Tasmania has been for some years a principal supplier of hardwood to tho building trade in eevoral Australian Statos, and builders are anxious to know if the manufacture of paper on a largo scale in the island will curtail the already diminished supply of building wood. The subject is very important, because hardwood is fast disappearing in several States, and is, in fact, so scarce and dear that timber houses in some cities cost almost as much aB brick houses. It is also well known that throughout the world immense forests are being engulfed in the insatiable maw of the newspaper press. In America all efforts at afforestation have failed to keep pace with forest destruction} in fact, they lag far in arrear. But whatever measure of replanting is to be adopted in Tasmania, this is certainly the first instance of a trading company putting it into practice. The enterprise calls for the attention and emulation of all other branches of tho timber industry.

"When installing an instantaneous_ hot water heater it is recommended that an ordinarv range boiler be connected in the cold water pipe line between the water supply and heater. Then cold water will first enter through the tank and much of the chill will be taken off. A saving in the amount of gas used will result, as anyone can see that extremely cold water will require a longer heating period to bring its temperature to boiling than water which is tempered.
