PROGRESS LEAGUE

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of tho Canterbury Progress League was hold yesterday, Mr J. H. Blaekwell presiding over a largo attendance, who were first entertained at luncheon. The chairman briefly welcomed tho visitors. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, summaries of which have already been published, the president eaid:— "Bringing to a common focus all the aspirations and aims of the community, inculcating tho virtues and co-operation, and discouraging disunity, the League has taught people who onco could only think parochially to think provincially. From thinking provincially the next step is thinking nationally, and that involves tho admission, in certain Instances, that tho claims of Canterbury must bo subordinated to the larger interests of tho Dominion. We ought to bo bigminded enough to see tho other fellow's side of tho case in matters where the interests of districts come into collision. But such an attitude of mind, embodying . the best sort of patriotism, by no means' involves bolng a doormat. Canterbury must always look aEter her o\vn business, becauso no ono else will look after it. for- her, and sko must press what she considers her jußt claims persistently and firmly." The Hon. D. Buddo, M.P., said that he considered that the progress of Canterbury wbb being helped forward by the League Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., said that it was due to the suggestion of the League that the Canterbury M.P.'s Committee was formed. The committco was grateful to the League for data supplied them regarding public questions. He would promise that tho M.P.'s of Canterbury would do thoir best to continue to co-opcrato with the League in the direction of forwarding tho aims of the province. , Mr A. P. Wright, vice-president of the League, Messrs J. K. Archer (Mayor of Christchurch), F. E. Sutton (Mayor of Lyttelton), H. S. S. Kyle (Mayor of Riccarton), E. Hay (chairman, Akaroa County Council), C. Flavell (chairman Heathcoto County Council), and R. A. Kenner (organiser of the Y.M.C.A. for tho Dominion) also spoke to the motion, which was carried. The election of officers rotulted as follows:—President, Mr J. H. Blaekwell; vicepresident, Mr A. P. Wright; treasurer, Mr W. Gos3; executive, Messrs C. Fkivoll, P. E. Sutton, J. K. Archer, A. P. Carey, A. P. Drayton, Win. Machin, H. T. Armstrong, M.P.. G. Armstrong, C. T. Aschman, C. K. Baynon, N. D. Campbell, F. Coop, J. A. Plesher, J. C. Prec, R. Galbraith, It. Gardner, G. M. Hall, G. H. Holford, H. Holland, H. P. Herbert, W. J. Jenkin, G. 11. Judd, H. J. Knight, H. P. Luers, W. E. Leadley, W. T. Lester, W. T. Lill, A. J. Magsoii, Robt. Macartney, W. K. McAlpine, R. M. Morten, G. T. Mulcock, A. Manhire, G. Rutherford, J. Seymour, G. Shipley, M. W. Stevenson, Jas. Storry,. J. E. Stracb.au, ,T. S. Simpson, D. G. Sullivan, M.P., Frank Thompson, Cyrus J. R. Williams, R. If. Webb, E. H. Wyles; auditors, Messrs Hoare and Kingscoto. A vote of thanks was accorded the organiser, Mr P. R. Climie, and staff for their past torvk'Os. It was decided to place on record a motion appreciative of the services of the retiring secretary, Mr Denys Hoare, his retirement having been brought about by the amalgamation of the staffs of the Progress League and Chamber cf Commerce.
