NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. Mr T. J. Withers has hecn appointed choirmaster of the Methodist Church Choir in place of Mr 11. Simpson, who has removed to Invercargill. A Ford car. driven by Mr Jordan, of Oxford, came to grief opposite the Police Station yesterday. In attempting to avoid a collision with another car tho steering gear lorked and the front of the car struck the kerbing of the footpath and oapsi/.ed. In the car with Mr Jordan were Mrs Jordan and her son. The front of tho car was rather seriously damaged. The entries'for the North Canterbury Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Club's exhibition, to be held next month, show a decrease as compared with last year s, although the poultry section is larger. Following are the particulars, with tho 1924- figures given in parentheses: — Poultry 472 (459), pigeons 34 (39), canaries 18 (32), fancy work 53 (70), art C (59), roots .58 (70). apples and preserves 10 (28), eirls' cookery 2-5 (4d), cats 25 (30). Total 704 (826).

KAIAPOI. The summoned meeting of Court Woodford, No. 6583, A.0.F., was held on Monday. The C.R., Bro, A. B. Cattennole, presided over a good attendance of members. The Woodward's report showed that there were 15 members at present on the funds. The secretary was instructed to convey the members' sympathy with Bro. G. H. Forrest, P.C.8., in Ins illness. Tho following officers were elected for the ensuing term:—C.R,, Bro. Jamea Clarke: S.C.R:. Bro. E. Brcadley; 8.W.. Bro. G. Blackburn: J.W., Bro. W. McPartlin ; 5.8.. Bro. G. J. Candy: J. 8., Bro. E. E. Bax: management committee. Bros. A. Blakeley, L. Oram, W. Tait. W. Clarke. P. H. Edmonds, and D.'Heney. Two new members were initiated and one was nominated for memhership. It was decided to ask the Canterbury District to arrange another meeting for instruction, in the new ritual. The retiring C.R., Bro. Cattennole, was thanked for his services during his term of office, and itwas decided to present him with a P.C.R.'s neck ribbon and place his name on the respect board. The receipts of the evening amounted to £259 16s 3d. After the business was over supper was handed round.

WAIKUKU. The Waikuku Miniature Rifle Club "held its weekly shoot on Monday night, also the last match of the first series against Rangiora.. The eight members, of the team are mentioned first and the scores were as follows: —A. Ellis 70, L. Whitlow 70, J. Wesley 69, A MacDonald '69, J. Robb, 70, S. Stokes (58, F. Stokes 70. N. King 69, W. SOUTHBROOK. The annual general meeting of residents to receive the report and balancesheet of the Hall Committee was held on Tuesday night. Mr N. B. Archer presided, and there was an attendance of f.bout 40. The committee, in presenting their report and balance-sheet, stated that the year had been a successful one. The receipts were £4O and expenditure £3B. Tho report and baip.nce-sheet were adopted. Mr S'. Sullivan, secretary to the recent bazaar, presented his report, which was very satisfactory. The net receipts were £224. The secretary and all those who had worked to make tho bazaar a. success were accorded a vote of thanks. The election of officers' resulted as follows: — Chairman, Mr N. B. Archer: committee, Messrs S. Pickard, "R. Doggett, A.' Tulley, A. Mcintosh, F. Meyer, D. Coleman and H. Archer; joint secretaries and treasurers, Mr D. Coleman and Miss Scott.

HORNBY-ISLINGTON. The second of a series of euchre tournaments, organised by Mr Noonan, was held in the Orange Hall, Hornby. Keen competition for tho eight prizes was shown! by those present, and a feature much appreciated was the manner in which the- hall was heated. The prizes were won by Mrs Seibein, Mrs Cooke, Mrs D. Lennox, Miss Lennox, Mr Burgess, Mr Whitelaw, Mr Porter and Mr Windle.

The fortnightly dance in aid of the Hornbv Rugby Loague fifth grade team, was held in the Orange Hall on Tuesday evening. The hall was gaily decorated with streamers and balloons, and the music was supplied by Mr Anderson'. Extras were played by Miss Lily Freeman and Miss Jean Webb. Mr E. Pearce was M.C. WADDINGTON. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Malvern Lodge, 1.0.0.F.. M.U., was held in the Oddfellows' Hr.U at Sheffield on Monday evening, when N.G. Bro. C. Tamblin presided over a good attendance of members. One new member was initiated and one proposed for membership. A vote of thanks was accorded to Bro. J. W. Green and the committee on their work in making the ball such a success. The ladies who so ably assisted were also thanked for their untiring energies. A very pleasant evening was spent, when in following up the programme a "Question Box" was held, many lively discussions taking place. Bros. J. N. Jebson and G. Butler, P.G.'s, were made co-trustees of the Lodge.

A large number of people from tho surrounding districts were present at a verv enjoyable dance, which was held in the Sheffield Hall. The music was supplied by the Darfield Jazz Band, extras being played by Miss N. Townshend, K. Millar and E. Fraser. Messrs C. H. Withers and J. Fraser acted as "I.C.'s. During the evening Mr H. C Townshend, on behalf of the Sheffield Hockey Club, thanked all those present for making the evening such a success. The club's funds benefited to the extent of £7, this being raised to help to pay their share of the cost of the new pavilion recently erected in the Sheffield Domain.

AKAROA. Tho Borough Council is s tilj actively interested in the movement to acquire for the State a small area of land at Green Point, Akaroa, on which stands tho monument commemorating the landing of the captain and officers of H.M.S. Britomart, and the hoisting of tho British flag on August 11th, 1840. The Commissioner of Crown Lands is to visit Akaroa shortly at the request or the Minister of Lands, and draw up a report for the Government. It appears that, in 1910, when the matter was being considered by tho Scenery Preservation Board, a resolution was passed recommending tho acquisition of the necessary area. The small piece of land in question was, at that time. part of the Glynan Estate, and one of the trustees refused to give his consent to the area being transferred to the Crown. Now. however, the estate is the property of Mr W. Robinson, and negotiations are proceeding for the purchase of the small piece referred to. When the Commissioner has had this surveyed and has submitted lu s report to the Minister, it is to be hoped that all will then be "plain sailinc." Mr W. Grounds, chairman of TT.Z. Dairy Produce Control Board, addressed a meeting of Peninsula farmers in the Duvauchelle Hall on Monday afternoon. Mr J. R. Thacker, of Okain's Bay, was in the chair.

OKAIN'S BAY. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Hand of Friendship Lodge Bro. J. Han-is, N.G., presided. Regarding the jubilee celebrations, a discussion! arose as to whether invitations should be issued to members' wives and friends to attend the afternoon function. It was ppinted out that this could not be possible, as the afternoon 1 would take the form of a. Lodge meeting, and would bo open to members of the Order only. It was decided to engage Smith's Band for the ball. P.G.M. Bro. Han-is installed Bro. J. Harris, T.P.N.G., Sister F. Hall, N.G., Bro. F. Mason, V.G.. and Sister C. Boleyn. E.S. The new officers returned thanks for honours conferred. Bro. J. Hunt was appointed R.S. toN.G., Sister C. Mason, R.S. to Y.G., Bro. C. Priest, guardian, and Sister R. Haines warden. Sister C. Mason, the retiring T.P.N.G., was accorded a vote of thanks. It was resolved that her name be placed on the merit board, and that she be recommended for the Purole Degree. The Blue Degree was conferred on Sister C. Boleyn' and Bro. J. Hunt, and the Gold on Bro. W. Mould. E. Coffin and C. Priest. Sister O. Mason and Bro. J. Harris received the P.N.G. Degree.

LITTLE RIVER. At the weekly practice of the Little River Band the secretary, Mr Jas. Southen, read a letter from Mr Caverhill, making .final arrangements for the concert, whioh the Sunheami Juvenile Concert Party are giving in, aid of the band funds.

ASHLEY BANK. There was an excellent attendance at tho fortnightly progressive euchre tournament held in the Schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The prizes, which were given by Mr W. Morgan and Mr J. Woods, were won by Mrs Schmidt and Mr Hector Schmidt. Hoavy rain from the east fell on Tuesday morning, but cleared up early in the day. Quite a number of farmers in this district are now using tractors on thenfarms.
