The death is announced of Mr Robert Heaney, who was well known to all connected with the soft-goods trade in Dunedin. Mr Heaney, who was born in County Antrim, "Ireland, in 1840, arrived in Dunedin in 1862, by the ship Red Jacket, from Melbourne. When the rush to the West Coast diggings took place he went to the Coast, and after goldmining and packing stores to the gold camps for a fow years he returned to Dunedin and made his home there. For over 50 years Mr Heaney was in the employ of Messrs Herbert, Haynes and Company, retiring oil pension about seven years ago. For many years he represented the firm in Otago Central, South Otago, and Southland. Mr Robert John Winthrop, of New Plymouth, who died recently in Napier Hospital, aged 44 years, was a grandson of the late Mr J. Benny, Southbndge, where he spent most, of his childhood, and the second son of Mrs J. Swaney. of St. Albans. Ho received his education at the .Southbridge District High School. He married Miss Cleary, of Oamr.ru, and settled in Ashburton, later moving to the North Island. He is survived by a widow and a family cf eleven —seven daughters and four sens. Mr Joseph Winthrop, of Avonside. and Mr B. H. Winthrop, of Inglewood, are brothers of tho deceased.
