A dusty north-east wind affected play. There was a largo attendance. Most of the spectators concentrated on the centre court. Nicholson (New Zealand) and Salmond (New Zealand) scratched in the singles to Brame Hillyard and Feret respectively. Miss Karnes's peculiar reverse service troubled Mrs Melody, who either overhit or underhit high-bounding balls, and was beaten 6-2, 0-2, 6-1. J. O. Anderson beat Andreae 2-6, 6-3, 6-o, 6-3, G-3. Andreae at one time, with the score two sets all, was loading 3-1, Andorson just escaping being eliminated in the first round. He seldom revealed his top form. Andreae waß a pertinacious defender retrieving brilliantly, while Anderson W3S mostly wild and erratic.
L. A. Godfree, British Davis Cup representative, was beaten by another Englishman, Nigel Sharpe, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. J. B. Gilbert beat tho Indian Davis Cup representative Hadi.
