WIMBLEDON TOURNEY RESULTS. (JY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPYBIOHT.) (UITMS'B TSLEQHAKS.) LONDON, June 22. The Wimbledon tennis tournament opened in cool, cloudy weather. A dusty north-east wind affected play. There was a largo attendance. Most of the spectators concentrated on the centre court. Nicholson (New Zealand) and Salmond (New Zealand) scratched in the singles to Brame Hillyard and Feret respectively. Miss Karnes's peculiar reverse service troubled Mrs Melody, who either overhit or underhit high-bounding balls, and was beaten 6-2, 0-2, 6-1. J. O. Anderson beat Andreae 2-6, 6-3, 6-o, 6-3, G-3. Andreae at one time, with the score two sets all, was loading 3-1, Andorson just escaping being eliminated in the first round. He seldom revealed his top form. Andreae waß a pertinacious defender retrieving brilliantly, while Anderson W3S mostly wild and erratic.

L. A. Godfree, British Davis Cup representative, was beaten by another Englishman, Nigel Sharpe, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. J. B. Gilbert beat tho Indian Davis Cup representative Hadi. The Frenchman, Henri Cochet, beat tha Yorkshire champion, Gregory. (Received June 23rd, 7.25 p.m.) Australia and Now Zealand between them were represented by 11 j>ia.yer9 in tho men's singles at Wimbledon, but tho New &ealanaera, Nicholson and Salmond, scratched and Fotheringnam's match was deferred till to-morrow.

Of the remainder only Anderson, Sumner and Barclay reached tho second round. Andreae provided Anderson with c. most thrilung and gruelling run. Ho aportingly sa.d he was glad he made such a good right, and ts&s most pleased that Anderson won, because he recognised that he could not have gone much farther, whilo Anderson might go to the last stages of the charnnionship.

Belgrave beat Fisher, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, 8-10, 6-3.

Barclay beat Mavrogoraato, 12-14, 7-5, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
