Our present Governor-General, Si" Charles Forgusson, has a most distinguished record as a soldier, and be delights to meet any who served with him in any ol his campaigns. Ho was in the Sudan under Jvitehener, where ho spent several years in the reconstruction period just following the defeat of tho Maluli's army. Sir Lee Stack, late Governor-General of the Sudan, who was assassinated in Cairo last November, was a brother officer of Sir Charles Fergusson, in tho same command. Quite a numiber of New Zealaudcrs are now serving in the Sudan as teaches, ministers, etc., on tho staff of the Sudan United Mission, and to-night, in Trinity School Ilidl. a number ol' new pictures will be screened ol missionary work in that laud of romance and story by Mr J. Priestley, Dominion secretary.
In November, 1923. tho Government removed the urotoetion on deer in certain portions of the Acclimatisation districts of Marlborough. .Nelson, North Canterbury"Waitaki, Otago, and \\estland. and a grant of i."]' l o wa*s made for the* purpose of assisting settlers in tho thinning out- of the- animals. The amount was divided amongst the districts conierncd in proportion to the numbj-r of oeer estimate - ! to he in each district. In each easo ono-tliird of the amount was available for the Acclimatisation Societies at tho rate of Is per tail for cverv animal killed by them, or on their beluv'lf. in those portions of their districts whero protection had not been removed. The remaining two-thirds has been distributed at the rate of 2> per deer tail to any person who killed deer in the areas wherein pro* faction Had l>eon removed, and produced the tails to the person authorised to receive the same. Tho amount granted has now been almost completely exhausted, and as the deer are still present in large numbers, tho Government has granted an additional sum of £IOOO for tho purpose, of further assisting the work.
