Considerable amusement lias been caused in Johannesburg, South Africa, at tlie results of a literary competition, organised at the Witwatersrand University. While every other competitor sent in original work, one, hiding his identity under the Latin pseudonym of "Itidens," typed out Shelley's "Time Long Past,' 1 and submitted it. The judges were three of the Union's foremost literary authorities, but they failed to detect the joke. _ However, Shelley gained but tlrird prize, the first and second going to essays in Afrikaans by two young students. In announcing the results tho judges gave •'Widens" some good advice. They re-iniM-ked that his work showed promise, and deserved encouragement, but that his diction was not clear. It was not until the winning efforts were published in tho University magazine that the practical joker was unmasked.
