EXIT CAMELLIAS.
GONE FROM CATHEDRAL PRECINCTS. iSevernl citizens interested in beautifying matters tdood aghast yesterday when they saw tho. camellia bushes that for very many years have been "•rowing near the southern wall of the Cathedral being cut down. The ukase having gone forth, however, they were xmable to take, effective action before the work of destruction was completed. These camellia hushes have l>een a distinctive feature o| the Cathedral precincts and will be greatly missed by lovers of flowers. Tliev possessed a rather interesting history- They were obtained tome thirty years ago from the garden of Dr. Prins in Manchester streets—a garden that bloomed 011 the site now occupied bv tho new Municipal Council Chambers. A reporter was told that the decision to cut down the bushes was not arrived at without due. consideration. It appears that as the result of a snowstorm experienced some years ago the eastern part of tho principal bush was badly damaged. Although the bush looked all right when viewed from the Cathedral square footpath the interior of bush was practically destroyed. The fierce sou'-wester that raged a few weeks ago completed the work of disfigurement, and as it was considered that there was no likelihood of the bush recovering itself and attaining its previous shapeliness, tho word went forth for its removal. This was effected yesterday afternoon. It is stated that the buslies were not favourably planted to grow to the best advantage. Their places are to be taken by other shrubs.
