NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The attendance at tho Oddfellows' social on Monday night was good, especially in tho card section, where tho prizes were von by Mrs L. Walls and Mr S. Lawrence. Mr and Mrs A. Breach provided music for the. dance. The luckv spot waltz was won by Miss L. Cox and partner.

KAIKOURA. A public social is to be tendered to Br. G. T. Miller, who has been acting as locum tcmens during Dr. R. L. "\\ ithers's absence abroad. The latter returns to Kaikoura this week. Mr Munro has been appointed ek-r--t-neal engineer in siiccession to Mr Iv. B. Girling (resigned). At the adjournod meeting of the South Marlborough Progress League Mr T. Harlo, vice-president, presided. Motions of fivmpathy were passed to Mrs AY. F. Mnssey and family, Mr D. Boyd and family, Mr J. Eaton, and Mr C. Xilsen and family. Mr Edmund Parsons proposed 21 new members, and received a hearty vote of thanks. It was decided to invite the president of the Fishermen's Association to set on tho executive of the League. Correspondence was road from the Post-master-General and Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., in reply to the League's request for the reinstatement of the WaiauKaikoura -fan-weekly mail service, which has since been complied with. A motion was carried that the Marlborough Progress League be nsked to furnish tho League with movements in respect to tho Main Trunk Railway, this League being anxious to assist in every possible manner. It was decided to write congratulating the Hon. J. G. Coates on attaining the Prime Ministership. A motion was canned that a letter be sent. to tho chairman of the Highways Board, asking what steps were being taken to improve the main road from Clarence bridge to Kaikoura, and to point out that the road at present was one of the worst in tho South Island." At the monthly meeting of the Kaikoura A. and P. Association Mr P. Acton-Adams presided. The draft bal-ance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l3 16s lid. Mrs Y. H. Robinson, and Messrs E. Olsen, H. D. Steve, and R. W. Boyd wore elected members. A rote of thanks was aoeorded Mr T. "Wilson for his further donation of £1 Is. Mr A. Gooch gave notice to move at the next meeting: "That the monthly meeting of the committee bo held on Saturdays."

WAIAU. • Mr and Mrs A. G. Creed 'entertained a number of friends in honour of Mr T. Morrison, of the local' Post Office staff, who is shortly leaving for Wellington on promotion. The evening massed vory pleasantly with various games and competitions, the latter being won by Mrs Coles, Misses I. Aee and L. Hill, and Messrs J. Mcßryde, H. Stove, and E. Creed. Mr H. T. Knight, in an appropriate speech, expressed regret at the approaching departure of the guest of the evening, and presented him, on behalf of those present, with a shaving-stand and razor. Mr Morrison suitably responded. After supper had been handed round, games were kept going merrily until a late hour, when the party ended with the singing of "Aula Lang Syne."

OXFORD. The Farm School is maintaining its interest, and the attendance and enthusiasm are increasing. On Monday, night there was an attendance in the neighbourhood of -00. In the afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Mr H. E. B. Watson gave a demonstration on the points of a Clydesdale horse, and, on the motion of Air C. Macintosh, was heartily thanked. This was followed by a lecture by Mr J. Kerrigan on the diseases of sheep, particularly at lambing time. The lecture in the evening was by Mr A. H. Cockayne, and was on pasture management. Yesterday morning Mr Ward lectured on. top-dressing of pastures, and Mr Cockayne on diseases of wheat. As Messrs Cockayne UncT "Ward had to leave for Kirwee to give a short series of lectures, a motion of thanks to them for their lectures, and for the inspiration and suggestions they had given, was carried with applause. Mr Cockayne responded, and congratulated the district on the success of the school.

SEFTON. A meeting.of -the" fcScfton Miniature •Eiflo Club was held on Saturday, Mr G. Olarko presiding. It was decided to send it senior and junior team to the tourney to he held at Rangiora. It was arranged that Messrs Tisdall's trophy bo awarded to the best shot 18 vears or under. As the Astridge Shield had been, won outright by T. Dalzell, Mr G. Clarke offered to replace it with another.

A meeting of the North Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union was held iu the Domain pavilion on Monday night. The president, Mr A. Cameron, presided. Arrangements were made whereby a team representing the North Canterbury Union will meet the Hurunui representatives at Amberley on July 4th, after which a dinner and smok'c concert will bo held.

On Monday evening a wireless demonstration in aid of the library funds was given iu the schoolroom by Mr T. 11. Blain, of Rangiora. Unfortunately, static -was very troublesome, but still orchestral items from Station 3YA, Christchurch, came through well, giving tho large audience present an idea of what wireless reception was like. Mr P. J. Thome, chairman of the Library Committee, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr T. H. Blain for his kindness in coming to Sefton, which was carried by acclamation.

HALSWELL. The fifth series of euchre and dance socials, in aid of the local football club, was held in the hall on Saturday evening. Tho prizewinners were; Ladies, Mrs &a,vago 1, Mrs Ell 2; gentlemen, Mr Fred Sparks 1, Mr R. Barroil 2. The danco music was supplied by Miss Moore, extras being played by Miss N. Eaglesome. Mr R. Harrison was M.C. The bachelors of Halswell held a meeting on Monday evening in connexion with their annual hrJ). The following officers wero selected: Chairman, Mr H. Cox; secretary, Mr R. highbank. A very pleasant evening was spent in the Higlibank schoolroom on Saturday last. The switching on of the electric light was performed by Mrs E. Crawford, sen., who is the oldest lady resident in the district. Various speeches were made by some of the older residents, after which the third fortnightly euchre tournament was held, Mr and Mrs R. Brawley winning the prizes. The runners-up, Miss S. Ledgerwood and Mr G. Clceve, also received prizes.

DUNSANDEL. A "hard-un" social was held in Dunsandel Hall on Monday in aid of the scliool funds. There was a large attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The grand march was led by Miss H.. Cruise and Mr G. McPonajd, and th? grotesque and comical costumes caused considerable merriment. Prizes fcr the best costumes were won bv Miss I. Chappell and Mr Hill. The judges were Miss Whito and Mr Clayton. Excellent music was supplied by McDonald's Orchestra, of Itakaia." Extras were played by Miss I: Chappell. Messrs B. Raplcy and G. WEST MELTON. The weather here for the last fortnight has been very wintry, and severe frosts have been experienced. The majority of the potatoes have been lifted, and on tho whole the crops have turned out satisfactorily. The new hall has been in great demand for dancing this winter, and a committee has been formed, to arrange for a scries of fortnightly socials. The new miniature rifle range has been largely patronised, and is providing good training for its 50 members. At the weekly shoot the competition for a trophy presented by the club captain was concluded. The following competitors qualified, with handicap:— W. Oakley, jun. (2) 35, A. Hulston (5) 31, W. McKav (7) 30, A. Summerfield (10) 28, E. Hutton (5) 30, Y. Davis (7) 29, H. Hawke (7) 33, G. Jowers (11) 2?, D. Walker (8) 31. In the second shootoff A. Summerfield proved tho winner, and also won the club's weekly medal.

SPRINGSTON. The sixth of a series of euchre tournaments, controlled by tho U.A.0.1). Lodge, was held in the hall on ibaturday. The winners were Miss Ida Thomas and Mr N. Neale, the latter after playing off with Mr A. Kirk. After supper a dance was held, Mr Rob. "Wall supplying the music and Mr li. Wilson acting as M.C. On Friday evening last a Band of Hope, xinder the auspices of the W.C.T.U., was held in the Public Hall. The attendance was only moderate. Miss Henderson, of Ohristchurch, was present and addressed tho gathering. The Rev. J. W. Parker presided and the programme was gitven by tho following: Misses A. Kime, A. Wilson, K. Wilson, Jean Marshall, and the Rev. Robertson. A dialogue was given by a. number ot girls a.nd bo\ s. A vote of thanks to Miss Henderson and all who had helped at the meeting was proposed by Mrs ■ Kime and seconded by Mrs KinVber. Supper was handed round at the close of the meeting.

CHARING CROSS. The fortnightly euchre tournament and dance -was held in the Charing Cross •School on Friday night. There was a largo attendanco of residents and visitors from surrounding districts. Tho prizewinners were: Ladies', Mrs McLaughlan Ist, Mrs Jones 2nd; gentlemen s, Master Clarence Adams Ist, Mr A. Bull 2nd. Supper was handed round, after which a dance was held, the musicbeing supplied by Mr I). Foster, and Mr N. Kay was M.C.

LEESTON. Certificates of proficiency in home nursing were presented to the members of the Leeston class, which lias been studying under the instruction of Sister Clark, at a social in the Wesley Hall. Songs were sung by Mrs Wagner and Miss Anne Cunningham. Mr A. J. Gray, who made the presentations, congratulated the winners, whose names wero as follows: —Mesdames W. 0. Rennie, W. Watson, R. Grant, F. Gurnscy, W. A Sawyer, and Miss Jamieson. The Leeston Bowling, Tennis, ami Croquet Club has appointed a committee, consisting of Messrs F. A. Wagner, T. S. Gregory, W. A. Sawyer, and Dr. W. A. Johnston, to handle business connected with tho laying of new asphalt courts, for which the major portion of the proceeds of a bazaar held last month is to bo devoted. The section on which it is proposed to construct the courts is to be ploughed and levelled and laid with shinglo beforo the asphalters commence work. It has been estimated that the club will require at least an additional £IOO to cover tho cost of the whole work, making a total of £450. When tenders for the asphalting have been received, the committeo will report to a general meeting of the club, which will be asked to discuss ways of raising the additional amount. According to the bazaar agreement, funds in excess of £2OO are to be used in laying a croquet green for the lady members, and when the present tennis courts arc dug up there will he ample room for a full-sized green, which it is hoped to have sown down this year. Friends of Mr H. S. Young gathered on Monday for the purpose of making him a presentation and of expressing their good wishes in view of Lis impending departure for Chrisfcj church. Mr Young is a Leeston-born youth, and since leaving school has been a member of the Post Office stiff. Reference was made to his courtesy and ability as a public sen-ant, and to his popularity in civil life, particularly on the football fieJd. A presentation pf a gold watch, bearing a suitable inscription. was made by Mr R. M. Robertson, who congratulated the guest on his promotion to Christchurch and wished him success and nrosperity in the service. The Rev. Father Creed, Constable Moriarty, Mr G. W. Purser (president of the Leeston Football Club) and several others, added their congratulations. The guest fittingly responded.

OKAIN'S BAY. A party of residents visited "Wharenui," the residence of Mr and' Mrs E. G. Mason, with the object of farewelling their eldest son, Val, who is leaving the district. A very enjoyr.ble evening was spent in games, competitions, cards, musical items, and dancing. A surprise packet competition was Avon by Mr Floyd Mason. After supper, Mr W. Eobinson eulogised the guest of the evening, and asked him to accept a small token of his friends' esteem. He re-j marked that Mr Val Mason would be much missed in the district, as at all j times lie had taken an active interest in social and sporting events, and that., his place would be hard to fill. Mr Mason suitably responded. Dancing was indulged in to the early hours. Before the departure of the party, Mr S. H. Thomas thanked Mr and Mrs Mason for the hospitable manner in which they had.received the party. In reply, Mr Mason said that he and his family had derived much pleasure from the function, and greatly appreciated the kind remarks that had. been made. Those present were: Mrs Arnold Ware, Miss Geraldine Bos, Mrs S. H. Thomas, Miss Euby Haines, Mrs W. Robinson, Mrs ' Eeg. The fortnightly meeting of the Ladies' Guild was held in. the Library, Mrs J. Boleyn presiding. The, Guild day has been altered from alternate Thursdays to alternate Fridays. Members present were: Mrs T. G. Ware, Mrs S H. Thomas, Miss A. Ware. Mrs Silas Harris, Miss G. Box, Mrs Alan Mason, Miss M. Moore, Mrs McConuel, Mrs P. Harris, and Mrs Archie Warn. Miss L. Moore is on a visit to her grandmother, Mrs C. Moore, Christchurch. Mrs Eeg. Mason has returned from a tour of the North Island. Miss Eita Mason is on holiday in Christcliurch.

Mr and Mrs G. Dibble are in town for the Livingstone-Stewart wedding. "Word has been received that Mrs E. A. Harris has been discharged from the Christchurch Hospital, and is now in the Convalescent Home on Cashmere Hills. Mr Val Mason has been appointed to a position in the office of the SpringsElfesmere Power Board, Leeston.

The third progressive euchre tournament under the auspices of the Oddfellows' Lodge was held on Saturday night. The prizes went to Miss Stella Harris and Mr H. Tibbotts, and the consolation prizes to Miss Daphne Harris and Mr S. H. Thomas. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing, music being supplied by Mrs W. Robinson and Mr G. Graham. LE BON'S BAY. At tho monthly meeting of the directors of the Le Bon's Dairy Factory, there were present: Messrs P. Barnett (chairman), B. Barker, W. A. E. Elliott. T. Mcintosh, R. C. O'Connor, "W. McKay and A. E. Williams (secretary). Mr R. H. Williams, the representative of A. 11. Turnbull and Co., was present by invitation. It was resolved, to put tlio whole of next season's output through liis firm. Another penny is to .Ijo paid out on last season's butterfat, making a total of Is 3d. More will Ijo paid out when further returns come to hand. The installation of a butter plant was discussed. It> was decided to obtain estimates from various firms of tho cost of installation.

The bi-monthly meeting of the Library Committee was held last week. Present: Messrs P. Barnett (chairman), T. Mcintosh, C. Barker, C. Barnett and W. Sharpe (secretary). It was decid'ed to install two lights and a heating point at the estimate of tho Power Board. It was agret-d to procure the book. "Tales of the Peninsula" for the library. Mrs A. 0. Crotty has returned to the Bay after a short holiday with licr parents in Akaroa. Miss B. Fergusson, of View Hill, Oxford, is staying with Mrs O. Thelning, Lavericks.

Mrs H. McPhail and Miss M. Crotty are spending a holiday in Geraldine. Mr L. Crotty returned to the Bay on Saturday after a holiday in Temuka. The frosts of last week were the coldest experienced here since tho heavy snowfall of 1918.

The local football team journeyed' to Little Akaloa by lorry on Saturday. Their opponents, however, proved too strong for them and defeated them by 34 points to nil.

HORORATA. The Hororata Hail Committco held its weekly progressive euchre tournament on Saturday night. There was o big attendance of -players. The prizes were awarded to the following: Ladies, Mrs It. Gray 1, Mrs H. Parker 2; gentlemen. Mr L. Lewis 1, Mr M. Kellaway 9

A public farewell social is being tendered nest week to Mr and Mrs Jno. Wilson (who are leaving for the North Island) and. Mr and Mrs Pratt (who are going to the West Coast). The Rev. Frank Rule, superintendent of tho Bligh's road Presbyterian Orphanage, Trill conduct services in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday fortnight. On Saturday the Hororata footfall team journeyed to Lake Coleridge and defeated the local players by points to nil. The Ivinvee juniors football team visited Hororata on Saturday, aim after a good game defeated Hororata by 12 points to G.

BURNHAM. The weather this week has been a pleasing contrast to that of last week. The days, with the exception of Sunday, have been fine, following on the hard frosts. Thursday morning saw the hardest frost of the winter so far in Burnham. Monday was a beautiful day and tlie thermometer registered 67 degrees. There was a nor'-west breeze which did an immense amount of good. The most successful euchre tournament and dance this winter was held at the school last week. There was a largo attendance. The prizes were won by Mrs J. Walker and Mr James, of Norwood. The supper was presided over by Mesdames James, MeGlacken, Shaw, and Misses Wright and Eobinson. Music for tho dance was played by Mr A. E. Shadbolt. o _____

SPENCERYILLE. The anniversary service and prizegiving in connexion with tho /Sunday school took place on Saturday. The Eev. J. B. Nanscn, who conducted the service, gave a most interesting address on tho aims and objects of tho Sunday school. Mr A. E. Lawn (superintendent) gave a resume of the past year's work, which, in spite of the epidemic, had been highly satisfactory. Mr Frank Miller, organist of the Belfast Church, played the hymns for the occasion. Mr W: P. Spencer, on behalf of the residents, tendered thanks to Mr Lawn for the good work he had done in connexion with the school. Mr Nansen announced that he would be holding a service in the school on the fourtl' Sunday in the month. The prize-list is as follows: —Girls: Diligence and attendance, Phyllis Spencer 1, Jean Spencer 2. Boys: Diligence and attendance, Wilfred Percy Spencer .1, Albert King 2; attendance, Allen Harris, Hex Harris, Keith Harris, lan Harris, Leslie Harris. The trees round the school ground have grown to a very great height, and the School Committee has decided to have them topped. The sections at Brooklands are being taken up. Twelve buildings are in course of erection at the present time. The syndicate has applied to the Waimairi County Council for permission to erect a bridge across the Styx. If erected, it will provido a beautiful round trip via Stewart's Gully.
