THE CARE OF BOWLING GREENS.
TO THE EDITOE 0? "THE PKBSS.
£ir,,—Like Dr. PhiUipps, I have .been •conducting an appeal for : open'-air and sunshine. '■ Tike hinl, I do not claim -personal experience and attach no import-; ance to my "ipso dixi," and btfor* expressing my views 1 invited criticism) I from two of the best known experts; and since my "notions" appeared -I £avo consulted others. . "With one exi ception they all saicVthat the greens -was unnecessary,. ■a. little sanci being mixed with the fertiliser to render it easier to spreads The exception thought a little soil "might be needed to make up for waste, but there was only one- month in which soil should be added, August. "I have lately'"visited several of the greens - and .note the absence of tho old smothering.layer of soil; and friends fi-o-m one- or two other greens have : reported most encouraging prospects for: the future. For years the green' supervisors put their heads together without asking any export advice, and the chief outcome of their deliberations was tho devising means, by tramways and piano wires, to lay, down, a level coating of •soil so that no part of the green should have an undue chance of open-air and sunshine: their: principal pet, the steriliser, latterly did not receive sufficient demand for employment to justify . its existence. One heretic, a noted horticulturist, averred that while the process might prevent tho seeds of weeds from germinating, it also had the effect of destroying tho nutritive bacteria in the soil. Who knows? Anyhow here's luck to tho open-air schools and tho open-air bowling greens. — Yours, etc., SENEX.
