THERMAL ACTIVITY.
THE GEYSERS AT-WHAKA. The thermal outbreak on the shore of Lake Rotorua is now quiescent (telegraphed the Rotorua correspondent of tho Auckland "Herald" oiu Thursday). A great deal of mud was thrown out and deposited in the vicinity. The water is still boiling, but appears to bo receding. It is probable that the hole will dry up and become filled with sand, as happened to a similar eruption below the Lake House about 12 months' ago ti In the meantime the people are giving it a wide berth. Thero is great geyser activity at Whakarewarewa at present. Apart from Pohutu, all tho geysers are exceptionally busy. The great Waikite geyser is rumbling in a discontented way, as if contemplating a protest against imprisonment. The mud geysers in tho Anlrikapakapa reserve are particularly jubilant, the big oue_ near the lake, which specialises on displays on frosty nights, was splattering mud with astonishing vigour vestcrday. The cones- at the lakeside near tho old Taupo. road were also in a petulaut mood. An interesting discovery made in one of the old. volumes in the exhibition of early Lancashire printed books was described by Dr. Henry Brierley to members of the Lancashire Authors' Association recently. Dr. Brierloy said he had found that the Rev. Georgo B. Macdonald, grandfather of 3lr Stanley Baldwin, the Prime 31inister, re-' ceived part of his education in Rochdale, and afterwards served as an usher in tho school at Heywood Hall, conducted by his, old master. i ii-- 1
