NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. On Sunday afternoon a new Sunday School connected with John Knox Church was opened to servo the Coldstream district. The promoters of the schools are indebted to Mr Charles Leech for the use of a farm building situated on the road leading from the Cam to Coldstream, and Messrs C. D. Gibson (superintendent of the Rangiora Presbyterian Sunday School) and A. J. Stewart (superintendent of the- new ■ school .with helpers transformed it into a room suitable* for its new purpose. About fifty, including children, parents and others interested, assembled for tho opening, and the gathering was quite an enthusiastic one. Mr C. I. Jennings, senior elder of the • church, presided, and in an opening | adJress emphasised' the need of efficient Sunday schaol teaching, owing to tbo" exclusion of the Bible from the day schools. Pfo also expressed pleasure at the evidence- of keen interest in the new school on the part of the parents of tho scholars, and urgnd them to encourage and support the teachers in their work. Mr Gibson and I Mv W. A. Banks also gave inspirational j addresses, and heartv singing led by Mrs E. Trollopo on tho organ, gave a brightness to tho meeting, that much i enhanced its success. N. Wilson, employed by Messrs Wat-kins and "Webber, met with very painful facial injuries on Sunday, through h ; s motor-cvclo skifldinp on the railway line, while turning from Blaekett street into Good street. He was thrown heavily and suffered concussion. He was removed to the Broeklehurst Hospital, where he is still under observation. HANMER SPRINGS. The wQscviob footballers made the trip through on Saturday to piny Hanme'i- in the first match cf tho second rourfd of the competition. A good game resulted in a win for tho local men bv To points to nil. Tries were scored by K. Pickering (2), Sutherland, E.'Cobdcn and "Woods. For Cheviot G. Clarke and B. A. Harrison, 7>. Have, and H. Denton wore conspicuous ior good play. Dr. Sowerby controlled the game. In the evening tho visitors were entertained at a dance. Hanmer's game on Saturday next is against Kails on ra on the latter"s ground. Visitors at Hanmer Hous-j are: Dr. P. 0. and Mrs Fenwick, Mrs Guthrie Blakelev and nephew. Miss Moorhousc, Mrs Aldridgo and Miss Sims, am\ Mr and Mrs Johnston arid Miss Sybil Mackay (Christchurch). There was a hard frost on Saturday night, but before daylight on Sunday a nor'-wester sprang tin. followed by milder conditions, though there was an absence of sunshine. Tho wind continued to blow fairly strongly throughout tlie day and would here the effect of shifting some snow. From a high level tho was falling throughout Sunday. WAIPARA. During the past -week tho district has :>, succession of sharp frosts, -followed by beautiful sunny days.' On Sunday a nor'-wester came up and it will help to dry up the ground which has been very wet lately. On Thnrsdav last the monthly meeting- of the Waipara Branch o v f the Mothers' Union was held at tho Glenmark Vicarage There was a good attendance- of member's - from Omihi and Waipara. An. interesting address was delivered by the Rov. F. P. Fendall. Musical items were- contributed by Mr.s Shadbolt and Tomlinson. Afternoon, tea was dispensed bv Mrs Fendall. Mr and Mrs W. Taylor (Waipara) have left on an. extended trip to the Fiji Islands. WAIKARI. On Saturday members of the Waikari Golf Club were favoured by an exceptionally fino day, when they- met for the purpose of opening tho new links. During the morning Mr J.'A. Clements, of the Hagley Golf Club, mapped out the course, and soon a> band of willing helpers was preparing the greens. Mrs "W. W. Mcßae, wife of the president, entertained those present at luncheon. In the afternoon Mr Clements gave instruction to several of tho members, and a.ftierwrjrdlj 'a, demonstration of driving. Afternoon tea was dispensed, and it hope was expressed that the services of Mr Clements con Id again be secured' at some future date. A hearty vote of thanks to' Mrs Mcßaci for ner hospitality was carried by acclamation. SEFTON. The first Band of Hope concert of the session was held in the schoolroom on Friday night, when the chairman, M. P. T. Thome, addressed the gathering on the objects of the Band of Hcpor Items were contributed as follows: — Songs, Mrs J. Cameron,. Mr* W. G. P. Quigley and Mr H. Ford and Master G. O'Connor; recitations, Mrs A., J. 'J'. Withers, .Misses I/. Rountree, Lorna Champion, Chrissie Bennio and June Withers. During the evening a children's choir gave several items. Last Saturday's match, Kowai v. Glenmark Seniors, held on the Domain, resulted in a win for tho home team, by G points to 3. For Kowai A. McNaily and L. Hughes scored, while 11. Berriey was responsible for the Glenmark score. At the weekly practice of the Miniature Rifle Club the following were the scores in the Association matches: — Seniors v. Rangiora: G. Mitchell, 70; A. Ashworth; 70; J. Quick, 70; M. Fletcher. 70; J. Lilley, 70: T. Dalzell, 63; L. McGowan, 70: G. Clarke, 70; F. Scott, 69; J. Mathers, G8; total, tdo. Juniors v. Territorials: E. Peter, 63; T>. Peter, 67; T. McGowan, 67; C. Armstrong, 68; A. Orchard, 67; J. Demmock, €S; L. Wilson, 62; F. H. Ford, 63; total, 520. TEMPLETON. The first of a series of weekly cuchro parties inaugurated by "the library committee was held in the library. There was a crowded attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Miss Ada Hampton secured the ladies' prize, while Mr G. Tuer annexed tho gentlemen's prize. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs W. Rowe and Master T. Genet. The local flour-mill has been thoroughly overhauled, and under new management, is now working at high pressure to cope with tho orders coming in. The quality of tho product may be judged from the fact that one large Christchurch firm has asked for the whole output. The only difficulty is the shortage of wheat, the new owner having taken over after most of the wheat had left the district. ' Next year is is confidently expected that very little wheat will be railed away from- the district, as the mill will be able to deal with all of it. A benefit concert in aid of the widow and family of tho late Henry Kenipthorne, has been arranged for June 30th. In such a worthy cause, a record house is assured. WEEDONS. At the fourth meeting of tho Weedons Wcslev Guild, tho Rev. J. W. Parker gave a very, interesting address on "Christ's Teaching Concerning His Death." The attendance was good. The next meeting will be a social and speech competition.
PARNASSUS. A very enjoyable evening was spent in tho Parnassus schoolroom on Saturday, when a euchre party and dance wore held. The attendance was excel-k-nt, every available, scat being occupied. Mr T. Wilkinson, chairman of tho Social Committee, presented tho prizes for the euchre, which were won by Mrs F. G. Barnes and Mr A. Chishohn. Tho consolation prizes fell to Airs R. Hill and Mr J. A. Courts. Music for tlie dance which followed was supplied by Mr R. Hill. AKAROA. A pleasant little function took place on Friday afternoon in tho primary department of the Akarca school, when Mr H. J. Barnham, as representing tho Dnvauchelle Sports Club, attended to present the Gaskin Shield to tho t:ani that had won it at_ tho sports gathering last month. Mr W. E. Jacob£on, chairman of tho committee, was also presnit,, and hc< and Mr Baniliam briefly addressed tho pupils, who wero assembled outside. The boys comprising the winning team —Bob Maseiield, Alick Robinson, L-eslio Mason and Ted Armstrong —were then called forward and tlie first-named, as leader, was handed the shield for another year's safe keeping, this being the sec(,'ftd tin lo the school has won if. Tlio winners, who, moreover, each received a silver jnedal inscribed, from the club, were heartily cheered, the same compliment being accorded the Duvauchelle Snorts Club.
. Miss Monica Kotlowski, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs A'. Kotlowski, of Tukawatua who has occupied a position in the Farmers' Co-op. Association's place of business in Akaroa for the last few years, loft jesterday for Christchurch. Prior to her departure, fiihe <ras entertained in tho Convent schoolroom by tho members of the Roman Catholic Church, and presented with a very acceptable token or esteem and goodwill from her many friends. Tn tlie absence of the Rev. Father Gallagher, from whom an apology was received, Mr Jas. Curry did tlie honours of the evening. After making appreciative references to Kotlnw.ski's work amongst them, he congratulated her on her promotion, and extended to her tho warmest good wishes for her future welfare*. Tli? rest of the evening was devoted to enrds and dancing, a suitable interval heir- allowed for duo attention to the ample supper provided by the ladies.
LE BON'S BAY. At tho fortnightly euchre party in tho local hall, 3Jiss V. McKay and Mr H. Dalglish were the winners, and Mrs H. ■McPhaij and Mr H. Gurnoy received the consolation prizes. Barker, who met with an accident in a recent football inatch, is spending a holiday at Temuka, The weather since Tuesday last has been a series of severe frosts, followed by sunny days, which, however, have not been warm enough to counteract tho early morning cold. A general meeting of footballers was held recentl:|. 3lr L. Gilbert was appointed delegate to the Sub-Union in place of 3lr I. Barker, who is unable to attend owing to illness. It was decided to provide tea and horse feed for the delegates to the Sub-Union. It was resolved that a charge of 5s be made to all spectators who travelled by a lorry hired by the football club. It was agreed to hold a general meeting to discuss a fancy dress ball in aid of the funds. AYLESBURY. The fortnightly euchre party and dance was held in the school. There was an excellent attendance, the room being filled. The ladies' prizes went to Miss J. Thompson (Ist) and 3liss 31. Thompson (2nd), and gentlemen's to Mr C. Wilsonjmd Mr F. French. Mrs F. Johnson, iviiss melina Whyte, 3liss Jessie Thompson, 31r S. Dunn, and Mr D. Foster supplied music for the dance. Songs were sung by Mr Joe Burt and 3lr Suckling. 31r G. Nicholl was 3I.'C.
KIRWEE. At tlio fortnightly meeting of tho Kirwce Amusement Club a very pleasant evening was spent. The euchre prizes were won as follows: Ladies, Miss M. Turner, Ist; Mrs Falconer, 2nd; men, Mr T. McGoverin, Ist; and Mr 11. Weir, 2nd. Supper was served by tho ladies, after which a dance -was held, the music being supplied by Mr S. Dunn. Mr H. Foster was M.C. ■ Tho-Courtaiay Social Club held its fortnightly meeting in th© Courtenay Schoolroom on Saturday, There was a, fair attendance gf members, who spent a. very enjoyable evening. A progressiva eiic-pro matcli was plaj-ed, tho prizes going to Miss Hunter and Mr O. Page, whilst Miss Bishop and Mr "NY. Bedford secured the consolation prizes. Supper was served by the ladies. • Tho weather recently has fcoen very frosty, fanners being unable to get onwith'their ploughing till midday. A north-west wind blew on Sunday afternoon and yesterday, and tho ground is drying up nicely. If the weather continues fine, farmers will make another start with the drilling of their cereal crops, which operation has been greatly retarded during the past few wecEi. SPRINGFIELD. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Springfield Plunket Society, flio resignation of Miss S. Popple (secretary) was received with regret. Tho following officers were elected:—President, Mrs R. M. 1). Johnson; vice-presidents, Mrs A, Duncan and Mrs it. Milliken; secretary, Miss M. Dorwa-rd; "committee, Misses Evans and Popple, (Mesdaines Dorward, Archer and Gold, others to bo addod at a future meeting. Mcsdames Johnson and Dorward were chosen as trustees. At the fortnightly euchre party, tho prize-winners were Miss D. McMeekan, first; Mrs It. Lines, second; Mr W. Taylor first, and Mr T. Zsimrno second. The local hockey team met Green-' dalo at the Domain on Saturday, and won by 5 goals to 1.
