STORIES OP MISSING CARGO. Dunedin can supply a parallel to tho strange occurrence recently reported from Engand of forty hales of ■ cottoa being imdiscoverable in a ship's cargo although tho bill of lading for it had been signed (says tho Dunedin "Star"). Tho barquo Ada Melmore, one of the first sailing vesesls frcm England to berth at the Dunedin wharf, was supposed to bring out two enormous cases of plato glass for shop window fronts, to tho order of Andrew Lees, but no sign of them could be found, and as the mate had signed for them and the captain had acknowledged receipt on tho mate's certificate, the ship had to pay the claim,, about £l2O. Twelve months afterwards this glass 'was found in London';' reared against the back wall of a shed at a small wharf. It turned out that a barquo which, had 'been lightering cargo to the Ada Melmore cast c.ff during the night. " The supposition at the time was that the mate peered'over the side and saw the .cases, and took it for granted that they would bo put on board and that, the bargemen, probably, tired and il a hurry to get home, did not notice .until' thev had cast looso that they had failed to deliver thoso cases. Still another peculiar happening about cargo is remembered in Dunedin. The Tongariro, on one of lier early voyages, landed two big girders weighing a couple °f t° ns cac h- For these there was no hill of lading, nor were they on the manifest, and they were- quite unclaimed. Months later the owner of tho vessel learned that another steamer of the e?me line, when discharging at Melbourne, had to admit short delivery of two girders of the same "description at about the same date—evidently the same goods.
